Got really real for me yesterday. My mother, who turns 101 in 25 days, tested positive yesterday.
The staff at the nursing home (she lives in downstate IL, by the way) has done a great, great job all spring and summer long. But it is just so tough to keep the virus out. As of Friday, it was like 15 residents and 11 staff had tested positive. Yesterday, which I assume was Monday’s testing, 31 residents (out of I believe about 80) & 17 staff were positive. And understandably as this has drug on, the nursing home has had a lot of staff just quit.
It really hit me as I was praying about it yesterday after getting the call from my sister that mom had tested positive. As I prayed for the remaining healthy workers that can be there, I was praying for courage for those overworked, over stressed, & underpaid heros as they are being asked (by me, essentially) to run right into the fire and help take care of the very ones that can transmit the deadly virus to them.
Good news is as of yesterday, they told us mom did not have any symptoms and was feeling fine. Even better news, same report today.
Holiday Bowl in San Diego, between ACC & PAC-12 teams,

"Amazing what a minute can do."

Interesting article in the Post on mask wearing. Includes this shocking image.

Of course, correlation does not demonstrate causation, but it is one more piece of evidence that masks work. Here's the link to the story: https://www.washingtonpost.com/busin...a-chart-masks/
Here is an interesting observation about that chart. We see in the media a lot of articles and pictures about people not wearing masks because politicians say it is not needed while scientist say to wear masks (which by the way is the logical thing to do given the way the virus is transmitted.) Despite the politicians comments even in places like SD and WY the percent of people claiming to wear masks is >60%. In the median state ~85% of the population claim to wear masks. So it looks like americans are listening to the scientists.
Worldometers reports total new U.S. cases at 81,210 for Friday, October 23. Looks like the highest to date. The seven-day average has grown to 62,400 within 10 percent of the July 2020 peak.

Starting to tick up locally also.
Perhaps the Midwest should mandate NOT wearing masks...could lead to I'm Not Going To Let The Government Tell Me What I Can't Wear!
Meanwhile, I am trying to reconcile the concepts of Turning The Corner and Most New Cases Ever. I think it must be subtle.

Marathon County’s cases were increasing at a 17% pace two weeks before the rally at the Central Wisconsin Airport. That rate spiked to 67% two weeks after the rally — more than double the state’s rate during those weeks, report Erin Mansfield, Josh Salman and Dinah Voyles Pulver.
