A Covid-19 cluster has been discovered among UNC-CH athletes with 37 testing positive.

    https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/...244092037.html

The football team’s workouts, which are led by players without coaches present per NCAA rules, will be paused at least for one week.

    ...

Now that there are 37 positive tests, the infected athletes will quarantine for 14 days at their permanent residence or in a residence hall specified by the university. That is in accordance with protocols the university established prior to allowing athletes to return.

Coaches and staff members will isolate at their homes.

In addition, anyone identified as a close contact will self-quarantine for 14 days. If they become symptomatic, they will also be tested, the school said in a press release.
Apparently no one told the players this was a test you don't want to pass as many were seen staying up all night studying for it.

How did he pick the seven who survived? It sounds like they were all young. Oh well, I guess it doesn't make a big difference in the grand scheme of things, but I do wish the reporter had followed up with "the rest of the story."
San Antonio has seen an uptick in deaths lately but for the most part they have all been 70+, with one 0-19 year old and a 40-49 year old. So, no change in 20-39 year old counts since that story published. And was the age range I think he was talking about.

One of my neighbors has a house on the Cape. They spent last week at said house. They went to the beach one day (they are open now in MA) and were turned away. The local police force is only allowing a certain number of people on the beach each day AND if the ones allowed on the beach are not practicing social distancing, they shut the access down early, as in even fewer people are allowed on the beach. And no, they don't let new people onto the beach as others leave, if it gets shut down, it stays shut.

We are 3 days into Phase 3 opening right now - meaning restaurants and movie theaters and casinos can open. I'm not going to any of those but I am getting my haircut next Thursday. Less than 200 new cases in the state for the 4th day in a row.

Governor Baker has announced that Phase 4 opening will not take place until there is either a vaccine or effective treatment. Phase 4 is large venues, road races, and a couple of other things that I can't remember right now. I don't know what constitutes a large venue but I think my director that is having us continue rehearsing Romeo & Juliet on Zoom every other Sunday is being a bit optimistic. I don't see us doing this show for at least a year and maybe more like early 2022, unless we move it outdoors. But hey, at least we're getting to pretend like we're still working actors.

Heartburn meds. Could this be why older people have higher fatality rate?

Quarantined from their summer classes!?! I know, summer classes were canceled, but did that really matter to unc athletic department?

I imagine the issue will be revisited at some point but yes, potentially never. Only my opinion here, but I think the Governor made that statement in order to shut down any calls for more openings right now.

Similar here in IL. We're in phase 4 due to decreasing cases over a 14-day period (which was evaluated in four different regions of the state) and won't get to Phase 5 until vaccine, effective treatment, or zero cases over an extended period. In our current phase, restaurants are open but capped at 25% capacity (or outdoors with space). I don't think movie theaters or casinos are open. They just opened playgrounds in my city which I'm thankful for (but still practice social distancing/masks).

After weeks of fairly flat death trends, Texas and California have now followed up their biggest death days yesterday with even bigger death days today. Not a good sign.

I thought they were “redacting” all of this info, due to “privacy” considerations. No, seriously.

BTW: Are they going to continue to require football players to wear helmets and face-masks (not just at U[sic]NC, but everywhere, high school, college, and pro)? If so, why?

Yeah, I am talking strictly about new deaths today. Our high water mark was a few weeks ago (for now, at least).

It's not as bad as it sounds. Only one player actually took the test. The others were just going with their usual method of copying off of the one with highest score.

How many tutors/paper writers tested positive?
[redacted] them and the horses they rode in on.

Didn't read the article, but the quote says "The football team’s workouts, which are led by players without coaches present per NCAA rules...". So why are the coaches also quarantining?

Well, in theory won't we eventually reach herd immunity? I don't pretend to know how many deaths that will result in (way too many) and it certainly is way, way down on my list of preferred outcomes. I'm 70 and I only have to be wrong once. Vaccine and treatment, treatment and vaccine.

Worldometers has us cracking 60k new daily cases for the first time (61,603 at the moment) with a distinct upward trend. For the second day in a row daily deaths pushing 1,000 for the first time in about a month, also a distinct upward trend. What a ***********.

Seriously, they were. However once it hit more than 5 cases it became a cluster reported to the county and state and searchable on all public COVID databases. At that point I assume they decided to reuse more information.

Regarding coaches quarantining, i don't know ask the regulations and timelines, but I don't think this is a zero contract period, so coaches, staff and players can meet for reasons, just not coaching workouts.

Roughly a West Virginia of population, assuming around 1% mortality. Closer to 2M than 1.5M.

Deaths are catching up here in this part of Texas. One for every age decade from 20s to 80s today. It was a record high day for deaths here.
