The day started with games in Asia as their qualifiers were also affected in February by virus postponements. Lebanon started the day with a 115-60 win over. Basketball is a big deal in that country, but that has the occasional negative effect of basketball and politics mixing and dysfunction in either crossing over to the other, which means that the league there has been stopped for months, but at least they were able to play here. South Korea declined to play their scheduled games while the other East Asia groups and West Asia Group F are not playing at this time. The Philippines could not field their pro players, who were playing their league in a bubble, so field a team of college players who will soon run out of eligibility and have to take pay cuts. Furthermore, local regulations restricted young people officially so there was drama about whether they could practice, but they beat Thailand, which was also not at their best due to local regulations, 93-61.

I was being a little flippant. I am sure that other people had input in the decision. He was earlier named President of South Sudan's federation with part of his responsibility to get players eligible for the team who moved to places like the United States, Canada, and Australia to want to play for the team.

Every time I see Canada mentioned, I get excited about a real challenger for team USA.

Spain is aging out of their championship years. Serbia has a few great players, but just doesn't have much depth. France has a few nice players too, but I don't see them consistently challenging Team USA. Australia could be interesting, especially if Simmons would play for them. Greece has (arguably) the best player in the world but they are already eliminated from qualifying for the next Olympics. But Canada is the only team that I think could consistently play with a full Team USA squad.

Jamal Murray, Andrew Wiggins, Tristan Thompson, RJ Barrett, Dillon Brooks, Dwight Powell, Kelly Olynyk, Cory Joseph... that could be a heck of a team.

    PG- Brooks/Joseph
    SG- Murray
    SF- Wiggins/Barrett
    PF- Powell
    C- Thompson/Olynyk

Greece is actually still in the running for the Olympics. In fact, they are in Canada's group so only one of them can qualify, but it seems unlikely that they would have Giannis available and nobody is really sure whether Rick Pitino is still the coach or not.

Assuming the Olympics go off without a hitch, Canada will still have to deal with the usual issue of player availability, although their key players should not be going too far in the playoffs. The longer NBA season may actually help them because there will not be any offseason workouts during that time that teams will try to strongarm their young players into choosing over national team play.

Whether Wiggins will ever actually play for them again continues to be up in the air, but there are a lot of possible combinations just with their NBA players.

Maybe something like this at this moment:
    PG: Gilgeous-Alexander/Joseph
    SG: Murray/Dort
    SF: Brooks/Barrett
    PF: Thompson/Clarke
    C: Olynyk/Powell

Obviously you would take Wiggins if he wants to play, but there are a few other NBA contenders with Stauskas maybe having an edge on the younger guys for now. Nurse might favor Boucher as the last post since he coaches him, but Khem Birch has the experience, Trey Lyles has been around, and there are also young players who are intriguing. Of course the avid international people would like to see the likes of Pangos, Ennis, Wiltjer, and Nicholson at least get a chance to compete with the NBA guys since most of them have always been available when asked. If everything goes according to schedule, we will see how much time Nurse has to prepare.
