Used to see him and chat with him when I was running a route in Yadkinville. Hung out at the Ford dealership. Was full of funny tales mostly about the moonshine business.

I had several chances to talk with Johnson back when I was involved with the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Yes, he was the moonshine-running-good ole boy. But he was also as sharp as a tack. A very intelligent man and obviously a pioneer in the development of a sport deeply enmeshed in North Carolina's history and culture.
One thing I recall, was his attire. Always a pair of green "Dickie" work pants and a white tee shirt..lol Usually dirty..
