Used to see him and chat with him when I was running a route in Yadkinville. Hung out at the Ford dealership. Was full of funny tales mostly about the moonshine business.

He was the human bridge between the new NASCAR back to Stock Car racin' and moonshine runnin' before that.

Here is Tom Wolfe's piece from Esquire Magazine circa March 1,1965. I apologize if that is not citation enough or not allowable due to copyright infringement.

Several years ago, there was a piece in the Winston-Salem Journal about Junior, and he colorfully described how happy he was:

"I couldn't be no more tickleder."

I had several chances to talk with Johnson back when I was involved with the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Yes, he was the moonshine-running-good ole boy. But he was also as sharp as a tack. A very intelligent man and obviously a pioneer in the development of a sport deeply enmeshed in North Carolina's history and culture.
