This one's for the ladies (and enlightened men)...

Congratulations on the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which very belatedly gave you the right to vote!

On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the last of the necessary 36 states to ratify the Amendment. It's always amazed me that this country existed for 130 years before the men gave you this right. Interestingly, it took until 1984 (!!!) for the last state of the 48 at the time to ratify it. Mississippi takes that "honor". Big shock. But my state of Florida did not wrap itself in glory, taking until 1969. The last 8 stragglers were all from the South. Another big shock.

On the downside, you can't shirk (half) the responsibility for the state of our politicians.

Still, it is a day to be feted. I will join you in hoisting a beer (later) in honor of the day!

Glad to say that Kansas was ahead of the times - the first female mayor was elected 4/4/1887 in Argonia, KS. Her name was actually put on the ballot as a prank by men that were against women in politics. They hoped she would lose and women would be humiliated. Fooled them - the Women's Christian Temperance Movement abandoned their preferred candidate and voted en masse for Mrs. Salter. The Republican Party also voted for her. She won 2/3rd of the vote. She served 1 year and was paid $1.
