As mentioned earlier today in the LTE, I find myself inexplicably thrust into a metal jag. I know next to nothing about the genre, though I have gotten some good advice from friends. Does anyone here like metal? I would like some further guidance. So far, I've been really enjoying Megadeth, plus early Metallica, some Black Sabbath, and some Judas Priest.
Who else? I've gotten some recs for Pantera, Tool, and Alice in Chains...what albums of theirs are best? I prefer stuff that's at least somewhat melodic (though, obviously, loud and frenetic). Particularly enjoying the speed metal aspects of '80s Megadeth. Any advice?
Also, what the hell has happened to me?

Tool is a favorite band of mine, but I wouldn't call them "metal". If you ever get the chance to see them live, don't miss it.
(All of their albums are great, but their self titled one and Aenima are near flawless.)

Ooops, my bad. Undertow. Same title as one of the songs, not the same title as the band.

Everything you need to know about Metal you can learn from the world's most unique Norwegian, Leo Moracchioli.

What would an Adele song sound like if it were metal?
What about your favorite '80s song as metal?
What if a musical like Frozen were metal?

Don't just read, listen to him!

Seconded. I love every Tool album. Aenima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days all worth a listen.

    I also love Metallica.

Chiming in to thank everyone for the recommendations.
Now, does anyone care to offer (or link) a quick primer on all the subgenres: speed, thrash, hair, etc.?

Whoa they killed it! That was awesome. Tool's drummer is really good, and that kid in the video nailed it. Thanks for sharing!

I am most definitely NOT a metal fan in general but damn, Tool has got a little bit of talent. Literally everything I've heard from them is amazing, including the new album. I think you have to listen to them in one sitting to really appreciate it, but all of their work is so polished and layered you can listen a dozen times and hear things you haven't heard yet.

New album had to be good. 13 years since their last album!

I listened to a ton of Zeppelin as well as the usual hard rocking classic rock bands in HS but I don’t find that or other forms of metal very interesting these days.

Alright all you metal heads - just announced May 1,2,3 2020 Epicenter Festival in Charlotte and they have convinced Metallica to play both Friday and Sunday nights, both full length headlining sets. Metallica twice in 3 days! I said it before in this thread if you have never seen them live you are missing out. This will be my 11th and 12th shows and it is always a truly incredible experience. There will be a ton of other bands announced next month but as a huge Metallica fan this is awesome news!

Back in this thread today, needing to burn off the angst of attempting to begin a new school year digitally, replete with today's 200-person strong Zoom kickoff, which is a delight in person but is positively depressing under quarantine.

    Slayer is helping.

Had a very frustrating day at work.

Had about an hour and a half of weedeating to do this evening before we possibly get more storms tomorrow.

Put on my headphones under the noise cancelling muffs.

An hour and a half of Ministry, Metallica, Megadeth, White Zombie, Disturbed, NIN, Nirvana, etc. I was feeling much better.

    Just thought I'd share...

Sometimes, there is no therapy better than driving fast while listening to music very loudly.

(Today it was Drive-By Truckers -- not metal, but it had the loud distorted cracking and screeching that hit the itch I had).

Lots of metal in my current rotation...must be the time of year to feel frayed and in need of a release!
I'm especially into Judas Priest and Mastodon at the moment. I've also begun the plunge into Gojira's catalog. I like their high-concept songwriting and composition, and they're both rooted in classic metal tropes but also modern and have their own sound. Listening to the album "From Mars to Sirius" at the moment:
