Sadly, the possibility of a sub-.500 team coming out of the NFC East appears to have died today (although it won't be officially dead until the game between them ends without resulting in a tie).

If you are a gambler, there was a pretty legendary "bad beat" in the Falcons-49ers game yesterday. Most sportsbooks had the over at 50 points, which is a high number so a lot of folks probably bet the under.
The game was 13-10 with almost 5 minutes gone in the 4th quarter. The teams needed to score 27 points in the final 10 minutes to bust your over. A couple routine TDs and a field goal later and it was San Fran 22 - Atlanta 17 with the Falcons getting the ball with 1:45 left. That was a total of 39 points, still 11 away from the under. Almost impossible to imagine the under losing at that point as the Falcons are hoping to score to win and there is really no possibility of OT with the 49es leading by 5.
The Falcons score on what appears to be the final play... it was actually ruled that the game had ended without them scoring but then replay said Julio broke the plane with :01 left on the clock and the Falcons were given the TD. They did not bother to kick or go for 2 as they had a 1 point lead and there was only :01 left. That put the game at 45 points... your 50 point under is still safe. On the ensuing kickoff the ball is being tossed around by the 49ers and somehow bounces into the arms of a Falcons player who takes it into the end zone. Game over, 29-22, Falcons... total points scored 51. The under loses when the Falcons score 12 points in 5 seconds.
Brutal...

^ Jason, did they really neither kick the extra point nor go for two? Did not know you can abdicate like that...did they at least take a knee? I would imagine you have to do something...
Giving up 12 points in the last two seconds is highly reminiscent of some Duke losses on the gridiron...
The Falcons did try the 2 pt attempt after the Julio TD with 1 second left on the clock. Matt Ryan tried to run it and failed to score.
The Falcons did not try for the XP or 2pt conversion after the recovered fumble for TD with no time left on the clock. I believe the rule is that if the conversion doesn't matter in the outcome of the game it is not attempted when there is no time left on the clock. This seems odd to me since the conversions are un-timed plays.

I know this will come as a shock, on par with discovering gambling in Rick's, but Josh Gordon has been suspended again for violating the league's drug policy.

Demented and sad, but social, right?
I got you now. I (and I think budwom) understood you to mean that the conversion attempt never actually occurred. It did actually take place but the Falcons didn't really try to score.
I'd guess that Atlanta thought with 1 second left that the chance of the 2pt conversion being returned for a score by the defense was greater than the potential benefit of being up 3 vs 1. IMO that was the right call. With one second the 49ers couldn't possibly kick a FG if the Falcons kicked deep enough.

I absolutely agree, but I also have a hard time finding any sympathy for football players who blatantly and repeatedly disregard the rules. Push hard with the player's association to get the rules changed and/or lobby Congress to make it legal everywhere if you believe the rule is unjust. Doing what you want anyway, particularly when you know the chances of getting away with it are slim to none, because you don't agree with the rule is selfish and hurts your team.
Addiction is hard to walk away from, regardless of if you are a CEO of company, burger flipper at McDonalds, or a top athlete. Being that this is his 6th suspension, I'd be surprised if it were for a PED in that sense of the word. Whatever it is, it's got him hooked. Hopefully he can find his path away from its grip.
Q "Why do you like Duke, you didn't even go there." A "Because my art school didn't have a basketball team."
Exactly. Most of the addicts I know are pretty low functioning but their multi-year track record of holding a job, trouble with the law, treatment facility placement, etc look basically like Gordons. It's amazing to me that he could be going through all that and still, at times, be absolutely breathtaking on the field. I mean, a great writer or artists can roll out of bed into his/her work; Josh Gordon must have had a lot of tough days on the field.

Honestly? What I really don't get is why it matters if people use the drugs at home and/or on days off. If you wanna drug test them at work or think they are high on the job then do a test that can verify if they've done anything in the last few hours. My job requires you get your hair tested but that can go back months, why should that even matter? Treat it like we do alcohol, don't drive or operate machinery while using.

As a Seahawks fan, it's been a rough 24 hours. Losing our top two running backs for the season yesterday after losing Penny a few weeks ago was tough. Losing to the Cardinals with an inept display on defense, still missing Clowney, is tough too.
But news that Beast Mode is coming to chat with Pete Carroll... well, that's just exciting.
