Actually, judging by the ridiculous penalty calls in the Giants-Redskins games, five things can happen -- reception, incompletion, interception, plus offensive and defensive pass interference. I think a lot of long passes, especially in the NFL, are thrown with the conscious realization that the offense might draw an interference penalty. College less so, 'cuz the PI penalty is maxed at 15 yards.

'I tend to sympathize with the defensive backs, who seem to get these ridiculous ticky-tack calls -- the Giants-Redskins calls seemed to be the worst'

'When I got on the bus for my first road game at Duke, I saw that every player was carrying textbooks or laptops. I coached in the SEC for 25 years, and I had never seen that before, not even once.' - David Cutcliffe to Duke alumni in Washington, DC, June 2013
Plus offensive and defensive holding but carry on.
Man, what a memory... that was my freshman year back when I was naively optimistic about everything Duke football. I remember watching the ESPN gamecast (since the game wasn't on the dorm TV) and being like, "Oh my god, we're in this against Va. Tech... they keep giving us chances... come on let's make our mark guys!" And every time I would think that Asack would throw the ball to the other team.
What an example of how far we've come as a program in 11 years!

I thought Jim was already on the football staff.

We are 4-4 headed into the 2nd Bye Week. The team is going to have to dig deep to find two more wins in the last four games.
I really thought the offense would be a strong running team this year. The indicators were there with talented running backs behind an offensive line with decent experience and some exciting youngsters. The passing game would be a work in progress.
Perhaps I allowed my optimism to get the best of me as I have a tendency to do.
The offense is broke starting with the inability to run the ball. We gained 2.7 yards per attempt yesterday. That is horrible. On pass plays, we gained 5.3 yards per attempt. Again, that is horrible.
The coaching staff has hard work ahead to fix the offense for the stretch run.

Basically going to be 4-5 with 2 wins needed vs Miami, Cuse, and Wake.
Bob I agree seems the running game not as strong as we had hoped before the season. I thought passing game was better yesterday when QH did not get happy feet, of course getting sacked a few times tends to give you happy feet.
Also seems the game missing injuries are adding up; Baker, Hill and Blackwell DNP yesterday.
Finally it has become a 4 game season hoping for at least 2-2 but will gladly take 4-0😎
I guess we should just play the 3/4 deep then😎
Of course we will be big underdogs to ND but they are next on the schedule and I expect Duke to compete.
there is no convincing reason to think the offense will improve given current game coaching and strategy...the stated goal preseason was to run at least four yards/carry and we aren't getting that done in the meat of our schedule.
