Stanley Borden - Portugal U20 Team

I have been kind of asleep on this one, but he and the Portugal U20 team start their European championship on Saturday. Games will be on FIBA's YouTube channel. From exhibition games that have boxscores available, he is playing a decent amount of minutes.

He’s always seemed to be like a guy who could earn more than just mop up minutes and providing a practice body. Granted he’s been played behind a heck of a lot of talent in the front court and will again, but I’d love for him to be a Vrank type of emergency use player who is more than serviceable when he comes in.

I thought he was from Turkey (though I thought his family was US ex-pats)?

Stanley starts playing in the FIBA U20 European Championships in Montenegro today for Portugal. Here is a link to an intervioew that he did and the FIBA site:

He had 5 points and 9 rebounds in 31 minutes as he got the start in their 71-67 loss to Italy:

Will he record 3 three-pointers in his college career though?

Yes, he was in Turkey before heading to Duke. I am not sure if he was eligible for any other national teams besides Portugal and the United States.

I think he's Portuguese/American but simply lived in Turkey for high school.

From when Duke added him as a walk on:

"Borden played his high school ball at the Istanbul International Community School and spent time playing with the Portuguese U20 National Team and the Besiktas J.K. U18 team (Turkish professional basketball club)."

Did Vrank drain 3s at Duke? 3 of them?!?!
Not to re-hash the ol' "should he have burned his redshirt" discussion, but Mr. Borden got a year of eligibility burned b'c he played in a single game the past season. Who knows what a) Stanley wants for himself re: college and basketball or b) whether he may in fact develop into a player who Scheyer puts in games b/c Duke needs what Stanley brings to the table or c) whether Stanley would even want to stay at Duke for a 5th year, but: it's a shame that all of those options are eliminated b'c of that one game.
It would be very cool to see Mr. Borden play in games regularly by his Sr. season, kinda like how Justin Robinson became a trusted player by the end of his time at Duke. One of the great What If? scenarios... stupid COVID

Conceivably if he lived somewhere long enough he might have been able to pick up another citizenship and represent their national team.

Level of competition internationally for these age groups are fairly low. If Duke was competing in the world cup every year we would bring him the title pretty much every year. Duke year in and old is good enough to rank top 10 in FIBA.

7 points in 23 minutes in their 91-56 loss to Greece:

It was always going to be tough, but their chances of getting a surprise early win to avoid relegation seems pretty low. They may need to focus on being ready to go all out in the final two games.

2 points and 6 rebounds in 23 minutes in a 54-41 loss to France:

8 points and 9 rebounds in 22 minutes in an 86-60 loss to Germany:

Unfortunately that means that they must win the next two games to avoid relegation to Division B for next summer's tournament. Somehow, the one team that they beat, Israel, is now in the semifinals and Borden managed to score more points against them than Adem Bona.

    pretty interesting background

portugal basketball not up to much but great exp against big boys of europe.

5 points and 8 rebounds in 24 minutes in their 82-66 win over the Czech Republic:

They must win against Poland on Sunday to avoid relegation.

4 points and 9 rebounds in 24 minutes, but they could not avoid relegation, losing to Poland 67-57:

Honest question here - who is further ahead in the rotation between Stanley Borden and Christian Reeves? And I know it's a given that neither will see any meaningful minutes in a game, but during practices if our first team has Flip and Lively in the frontcourt while our second team has Mitchell and Young, then who would be the first center off the bench for the first team?

We did get a glimpse of Reeves blocking a shot from Lively in the practice video, and the presumption has been that he will redshirt this year. But he also has more upside and could project to play a role next season and beyond, whereas Borden seems destined to be a career practice guy. So I could see a case for getting Reeves more reps in practice, but Borden being able to contribute overseas seems to indicate that he might be capable of more than just being a practice body.

    Reeves. And it's not close.

(Though if Reeves redshirts, technically Borden would be ahead of him.)
