The initial moment of the decline of sports journalism may have been found. It couldn't really take hold until the creation of ESPN and the "need" for 24 hours of "content".

Interestingly, this was written for Golf Digest. A UPI writer at the time just ripped into Lou Gehrig over his illness and retirement:

Fascinating - thanks for sharing. I would love to hear what he had to say when Gehrig died less than two years later.

Sometimes they play excerpts of Gehrig's speech at Yankee Stadium and I still get goose bumps.
