If you like that style of music, they are awesome.
Seen them in concert a couple of times locally in NC, and will be seeing them again this summer.
If you use Apple Music, some of their music can be found there.
Scheduled to be coming through Steamboat Springs this summer. Is it worth seeing?
Chapel Hill’s indie Americana quartet Mipso – Jacob Sharp (mandolin, vocals), Wood Robinson (bass, vocals), Joseph Terrell (guitar, vocals), and Libby Rodenbough (fiddle, vocals) – release their fifth album, Edges Run, on April 6th, 2018 via a newly inked record deal with AntiFragile Music. Influenced by the contradiction of its progressive home and the surrounding rural southern landscapes, Mipso has been hailed as “hewing surprisingly close to gospel and folk while still sounding modern and secular...”

Melodic faux bluegrass in the same vain as Mandolin Orange. Pleasing but a bit too earnest for my taste. I wouldn’t order tickets far in advance but I would go see them if I could swing it on the night of.
Faux bluegrass seems a bit derogatory to me. They are an Americana band. They don't pretend to be a bluegrass band, though they do use instruments that are associated with bluegrass.
Earnest would be accurate, though. I think their music has become better with the increased role of Libby Rodenbough, who sings a bit more nowadays. They're a bad fit for a raucous roadhouse, but quite at home in a theater setting. You can take the family.
Mipso is a favorite of mine. Mandolin Orange is a good comparison. Both bands write most of the songs they perform, and the instumentals are very good.
I once wondered if the softer side of acoustic music would survive. Thankfully, Mipso and plenty of other Americana bands are carrying that tradition into the future.
Merlefest in three weeks, music lovers!
Man, if your Mom made you wear that color when you were a baby, and you're still wearing it, it's time to grow up!
Didn’t mean to disparage Mipso. I haven’t seen them live yet but I’m sure I’ll get around to it eventually. They’re definitely in my Americana wheelhouse. I lean more towards Shovels and Rope, Susto, Tyler Childers, Devil Makes 3, Lera Lynn and a lot of older troubadours. Haven’t been to Merlefest in awhile. I usually go to High Water in Charleston, Floydfest in Floyd, VA and my fav is Rhythm and Roots in Bristol.

Just got back to our campsite after seeing Mipso at Ocrafolk today. I told my gf that I wanted to see them, specifically because of this thread.
They are beyond good, they are excellent. That being said, while I would happily see them again, I don't know if I'd shell out $ JUST to see them. While they played, I kept analogizing them with Mazzy Starr. Totally different music, but same feel. Excellent music, and it would put me to sleep if I had it kept playing for longer than an hour.
I was kind of giggling to myself, because at one point they went into this jam session, and it was like watching a metal band in slo-mo.
Don't take this as a harsh critique, just a bit of a complaint. The vocals, the harmonies...wow. And for today they brought in their old touring banjo player (who apparently decided law school was smarter than touring) for a few tunes, and also one of the band member's (Wood) dad on sax. That song in particular, whichever it was, was superb.
Next chance to see them in NC will be at the NC Museum of Art, August 31st. My gf asked me if we are going, and I told her I think there may be a minor football game keeping me away that day.
Q "Why do you like Duke, you didn't even go there." A "Because my art school didn't have a basketball team."
