Uh oh... Officiating controversy at the Derby!
Maximum Security gets all the calls![]()
Wow! DQ’d
Wow..Just horrible for Maximum Security. Easily the best horse.
The track was playing toward speed. Mud
was a dominant factor with little movement from behind.
Maximum Security looked strong, but difficult to rate the slow fractions/time.
The decision to take MS down was the right one, and would have taken 2 minutes if this wasn't the Derby IMHO.
Hopefully the Preakness will be on a fast track.
Congratulations to the Country House crew.
Finished 3rd in the slop in Arkansas, so obviously liked it.
Winning from the 20 hole, wow.
First win since maiden win.
Still hasn't finished first since then; doesn't need to apparently.

Cost bettors over $9 Million. Across the country over $6.2 Million wagered on Maximum Security. About $520, 907 bet on Country House.
Bad beat
The Country House jockey filed the objection, and it did not appear that his horse was at all affected by Maximum Security. But he certainly benefitted from the outcome.

Talk about money bet. Master Fencer, from Japan, probably had the most money bet on it, in Japan. The pools were separate (not comingled). I heard $10million in Japan; perhaps bet on him, finished a respectable 7th. That horse had a horrible start, being pulled up and last. Worth watching if he stays for further racing.

Sounds like an easy call to me.
War of Will was coming to him. War of Will was the big loser in this incident. Might have caught MS had this not happened. Good call by the stewards.
OK, seemed like best horse, but on a muddy track. It was a slow race too. But this horse was undefeated (before this).
Super Saver and Gone West were Mud Track wonders, and bred that through to many of their foals.
The Preakness will be interesting.
I listened to the TVG and Belmont shows today, and the professionals are split on what should have been done yesterday.
Some feel that the right thing was done.
Others felt that the Derby is special and different; akin to "swallowing you whistle" at the end of basketball games.
Also, since this is the only race where there are 20 horses, infractions happen all the time, if you inforce the same rules, you would get infractions all the time. You have to loosen the regular rules or it would be a mess. Interesting perspectives.
These views were from all aspects of the sport (jockeys, trainers, owners, touts).

I wish there were a way to just run the race again. How do you know which horse would've won without the interference? I'd rather them not disqualify Maximum Security than arbitrarily give it to Country House, although both outcomes are not ideal.
Maximum Security arrived at Monmouth Park on Tuesday. Is pointing for the Haskell apparently.
Sounds like this will be a potential packed race, with horses pointing toward the Travers.
Haskell is 1 week earlier than usual this year, leaving time to recover. July 20 for Haskell, July 27 for Jim Dandy.
The Preakness will no doubt produce a new horse the "they will be talking about". Although no triple crown, the summer 3YO races will be very interesting this year.
