There were some thoughts that this game could be tough for the USA U19 Men's team, but they took an early lead against Lithuania on their way to a 102-84 win.

In the other Group A game, New Zealand came back late to beat Senegal 66-64. Incoming collegians helped their team win as Kruz Perrott-Hunt had 14 points and James Moors had 10 points while current DII player Oscar Oswald had 11 points and 6 rebounds.

In Group B, Mali continued their impressive tournament with a 71-70 win over Canada with good games from the Drame twins as Hassan had 15 points and 13 rebounds and Fousseyni had 12 points and 15 rebounds while Abdramane Camara, whose next destination is unclear after his prep career, had 10 points. Ohio prepster Keon Ambrose-Hylton had 16 points and A.J. Lawson of South Carolina had 11 points in the loss. Australia bounced back and beat Latvia 81-52 with 15 points and 10 rebounds from St. Mary's signee Kyle Bowen.

In Group C, TCU signee Francisco Farabello had 15 points in Argentina's 77-72 win over the Philippines. Russia ended the day with an 83-75 win over hosts Greece.

Group D play started the day and France rolled again, this time past China 119-56 as Gonzaga's Joel Ayayi had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Serbia looked to be cruising early, but then Puerto Rico fought back and they barely held on to a 75-74 win as Gonzaga's Filip Petrusev had 23 points and 10 rebounds. Gonzaga featured on the other side too as their future player Julian Strawther had 22 points and 6 rebounds, Jorge Torres had 11 points and 7 rebounds, and Victor Rosa had 11 points as most of the roster has spent time in the states part of the United States.

Two teams gave themselves two shots at the women's tournament at the Olympics as Sweden eliminated Latvia and Great Britain eliminated Montenegro. Two more elimination games will be played tomorrow.

Players with college plans figured in the win as Flynn Cameron had 14 points and 7 rebounds, James Moors had 12 points, Kruz Perrott-Hunt had 11 points and 7 rebounds, and Max de Geest had 11 points.

Australia prevented Mali from winning Group B after hanging on to an 82-79 win despite 20 points and 7 rebounds from Gonzaga signee Oumar Ballo and 17 points from Pitt-bound Abdoul Coulibaly. That left the door open for Canada to win and take the tiebreaker, but they barely managed to get the result they needed fending off Latvia 78-76 with 22 points and 17 rebounds from Seton Hall signee Tyrese Samuel and 19 points and 12 rebounds from prepster Charles Bediako.

The titanic Group D clash for the top spot went to Serbia 85-76 over France as Filip Petrusev had 18 points and 13 rebounds to beat his Gonzaga teammate Joel Ayayi, who had 33 points. China avoided last place as a ridiculous statline from Guo Haowen was a part of their 99-94 win over Puerto Rico. In the loss, another Gonzaga name Julian Strawther had 35 points and Jorge Torres had 18 points and 9 rebounds and Andre Curbelo had 17 points and 13 assists among other players who played high school basketball on the mainland.

We were destined to have one surprise team in the semifinals and it was Mali, which beat Puerto Rico 84-74 with 22 points from St. Peter's signee Foysseyni Drame and 21 points and 17 rebound from Gonzaga signee Oumar Ballo. The other team had a number of players with high school experience on the mainland as Victor Rosa had 21 points, Julian Strawther had 12 points, and Jorge Torres had 11 points and 9 rebounds. The most anticipated matchup lived up to the hype as it took overtime for Lithuania to beat Serbia 92-85 as Gonzaga's Filip Petrusev had 16 points and 15 rebounds in the loss. A thriller also ended the day as Gonzaga's Joel Ayayi had 25 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists to lead France past Canada 85-80. In the loss, Seton Hall signee Tyrese Samuel had 14 points and 8 rebounds, South Carolina's A.J. Lawson had 14 points, Santa Clara signee Jaden Bediako had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Cal signee Joel Brown and Wake Forest signee Jahcobi Neath had 10 points each.

On the subject of U19 championships, teams are in the middle of the process to qualify for the next edition in two years before this one is even played. The U17 Centrobasket tournament is being held in San Juann Puerto Rico and finished today. The hosts and Mexico, which won the title game 61-56, earned two spots in next year's U18 Americas tournament that will qualify teams for the world championship in 2021 with wins yesterday and then today the Dominican Republic beat Guatemala 55-40 to grab the last spot.

The Women's U19 World Championship starts at the end of the week, but teams around the world continue to prepare for the one in 2021 as well. Europe's U18 Championships concluded today with teams trying to stay in Division A for the chance to play in that tournament in two years' time. The regional advantage of it being held in Sarajevo did not help much as Bosnia and Herzegovina lost to Lithuania 69-63 to be the last team relegated after Serbia and Croatia had been demoted with losses the day before.

It is not an age group that is contested on other continents, but the U20 level is considered the most prestigious in Europe and both men's tournaments just finished. Division A was played in Tel Aviv and Ramat Gan and Israel won in front of their fans 92-84 against Spain in the final. The other important games were at the other end of the standings, where Latvia and Serbia got demoted with losses on Saturday and then Poland joined them after losing to Italy 77-61.

After returning to Croatia from the NBA Summer League, Antonio Vrankovic and many of the same players joined up with a few new guys and traveled to China for the Stankovic Cup, beating Latvia 75-50. Antonio had 2 points in 10 minutes. Ex-DePaul player Maric Maric had 16 points and recent Clemson grad David Skara had 12 points.

A lot of future competitions have had their draws conducted recently.

The USA Women's team is participating in the AmeriCup again after years of only participating when necessary for qualification. They ended up with all four South American teams Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Paraguay. The other group will have Canada, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and hosts Puerto Rico. Duke participation in tournament, which will be played at the end of September, is still unknown.

Qualifiers for the men's tournament in 2021 were also drawn with the top three teams in each group advancing. The United States was put together with the Bahamas, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The other group from the northern half will contain Canada, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and the US Virgin Islands. Panama is being grouped in with the South American teams again and joins Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela are in the other group.

EuroBasket Women 2021 qualifiers will see the winners of these groups and the five best runners up join hosts Spain and France:


The pre-qualification process will not be complete until later in the year, but groups have already been drawn for 2021 EuroBasket qualification as the top three teams in each group will qualify, assuming that the hosts, Italy, the Czech Republic, Georgia, and Germany, finish in the top three.
