This is now a preseason thread. Duke gets 10 votes in the first USA Today Coaches Poll. Here's how the ACC was represented:
1. Clemson
22. Syracuse
29. Miami
32. Virginia Tech
37. Virginia
43. NC State
44. Duke
45. Boston College
46. Florida State
Duke will play Syracuse. Duke's other Top 25 ranked opponents are #2 Alabama and #9 Notre Dame.
Meanwhile, the AP Poll has announced when it will make its announcement: August 19.
Duke at number 44, Henry Aaron's number, first game vs Bama in Atlanta, harmonic convergence or what?
In other words, no one too intimidating in our own division – we should be able to compete for the honor of being the Coastal's ritual sacrifice to Clemson.
UCF will be interesting to watch as always. They return a lot of their good players from the past great 2 year run, but they're also down to their 3rd string QB.
Clemson grad transfer RB turns down Hokie Bird for the Gamecocks. That helps a little.
I decided to put this here, away from Jim's new 2019 Football season thread. It's an ESPN article on former Duke QB recruit Jack Sears doing boxing training at the Wild Card Gym in California (the gym of Freddie Roach, Manny Pacquiao's trainer). On one hand, who cares, he's no longer one of us. On the other hand, I found it interesting. In case anyone else does, here it is:

Last year the starting QB threw 363 passes, Jack got to throw only 28...maybe his best move is to punch out the starter? While I wish Sears no ill, I don't mind seeing him sit on the bench...yes, he had a right to change his mind after his Duke "commitment," but when a QB reneges (since precious few are recruited) it really hurts...and it hurt Duke.
