Jason’s in an impossible situation, in that politics are as polarized and inflammatory as they have been in 150 years. Trying to moderate a civil discussion is wildly difficult. Especially given how emotional people are on both sides of the aisle.

I endeavor to stay out of this discussion as much as I can, and I know I've been dinged in the last. I also have to say I truly appreciate that this is a place of intelligent discourse. I really enjoy the back and forth of people smarter than myself analyzing things that make no sense to me.

Since Bernie is a self-described socialist, I can’t see why applying that label to him would be offensive or out of bounds. He embraces it.

FWIW I think the board does a fair job of monitoring itself. This issue obviously struck a visceral nerve with a lot of people, myself included. Over the years when I have posted things that go against the popular sentiment, I have felt safe to do so even though the response is predictably negative. If I find myself swimming too hard against the current after three posts, I shut it down and move on.

And as Bob said, PMs that are over the line can be reported.

I think we should all congratulate ourselves on defying Godwin's Law during the 24 hour hour free-for-all. Kudos, everyone! We are truly gentlemen/women and scholars!

Folks, let's drop the discussion about whether or not Trump's tweet was racist. We will not allow any more conversation about that as it has clearly morphed into a partisan issue.

If one wants to discuss how the "allegedly racist" tweet might impact the election, feel free and cite sources. But any conversation about it outside of that context will result in a stiff infraction.

Also, I'm shutting this thread down for a day or so to give everyone a rest.

    regards,

    -jk

Ok folks... reopening the thread. Let's all play nice. No more conversation about whether or not what Trump said/did was racist unless you have some link or poll or something other than an opinion about it.

    Thanks.

Run all of these through FaceApp and show them all in 20 years and I wouldn't do a lot worse...

9 of 20, and then I could make a few guesses. At best 12 or 13 out of 20.

I've seen several ads of these C-teamers asking for $1 so they can qualify for the September debates. I hope they're not successful or the DNC fixes this loophole. $1 is not support.

Comfortable 12, a few stabs, then a pick 'em. The teeth vs. no teeth smile was a discussion among the candidates' respective teams in choosing every single one of those photos. Guaranteed.

It's been trending this way for some time but I read another article today that suggested all the money and interest is essentially coalescing around 5 candidates: Biden, Sanders, Harris, Warren, and Buttigieg. Eyeballing the latest general election polling I've seen goes something like this:

    Biden comfortable favorite over Trump
    Sanders slim favorite over Trump
Warren and Trump a pick 'em
Trump slim favorite over Buttigieg and Harris

If I was a republican I would donate $1 to the bottom 10.

The third debate will be much tougher.

The polling threshold for inclusion will be raised to 2 percent, in at least four polls between June 28 and August 28. Second, candidates would also need 130,000 unique donors to qualify (with at least 400 donors each in 20 states).

Unlike the first debates which were polling OR donations, the third debate will be polling AND donations.

    I can probably name 8 or 9.

There are about 4 or 5 viable candidates and the rest are all the equivalent of the four "play in" or "first four" teams in the NCAA tournament. I mean no disrespect, but this all seems like a giant waste of time. There can be no substantive debates until the field is whittled down to a handful of candidates.

I can do 14 with relative ease... the other 6 (all the middle aged white guys) are little more than a guess to me.

19 of 20. And no - I didn't watch the first debate. I don't intend to watch the second either. I did, however, look at a picture of all the candidates included in the first debate. Is there one candidate that is new - as in didn't make the cut for the first debate but did for the second?

Answered my own question - Swallwell is out, so, somebody replaced him and that's the one I don't recognize. Looking it up now, Steve Bullock. Last one on the right, top row.

Yep, I suggested that exact strategy upthread. Keep the clown show going.

I hope that is not deemed partisan. People campaigning for 6 months and can't crack 2% or get a significant number of donors is pathetic. Thankfully it will be AND for the September debates.

Remember that game when you were home sick from school where contestants had to match symbols to clear the board, and I think a rebus was underneath?

You would have been great at that game.

Edit: Concentration!!! Loved that show. Loved the rebuses. Seem to remember I had the board game when I was 6 or 7 years old.

That's exactly right. (Meaning I had the exact same experience :-).

14 are easy to get, and it probably warms the heart of any, say, Klobuchar backer that we can say that.

The 6 that we can't get: from the first night, the three on the far right; from the second night, the first guy and then the two on the far right.

So, here's where the current field of Dems stand based on recent polling and the RCP averages --- Here's the link as I can't seem to make the photo appear bigger in thread.

    Polls.jpg

A couple of interesting articles in relation to the above.

Sanders and Warren voters have surprisingly little in common. I would have assumed otherwise given similarities in their economic messages and orientation. Of particular note --- older folks prefer Warren, younger folks Bernie. This could benefit Warren in the primaries...but not in the general.

In an analysis that doesn't surprise me, Beto doesn't have a base. Sure he caught fire against a very unpopular and Grayson Allen look alike Ted Cruz but how many people could reasonably describe his political philosophy and orientation? He's not known for anything. In 2008, as a contrast, Obama was at least well known for having made an anti-Iraq War vote (in comparison to Hillary), which mattered to a lot of the Dem primary voters.
