As so often happens, there seems to be a lot of focus now on an alleged White House cover up...deja vu all over again I guess.
There will be multiple versions of context.

Why did Trump want the information?

'When I got on the bus for my first road game at Duke, I saw that every player was carrying textbooks or laptops. I coached in the SEC for 25 years, and I had never seen that before, not even once.' - David Cutcliffe to Duke alumni in Washington, DC, June 2013
He has also tried to at least partially reinvent himself as some sort of fire-breathing populist, and run away from the thoughtful technocrat image that he had otherwise spent his whole career building. This may have been part of the general effort to distance himself from Clinton, but still came off as pretty disingenuous to many.

No one throws Rudy in a corner:
https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/26/politics/giuliani-denies-charges-whistleblower-complaint-ukraine/index.htmlHe also said he had more text messages, five or six, that indicate the State Department was encouraging his work in Ukraine.
"I'm going to use them to protect myself if and when I need them," Giuliani said.

I thought it really odd a day or two ago when Rudy had a TV interview, held up his phone, and said he had the proof "right here" that he was working at the direction of the State Department. Who volunteers to investigators that you have evidence, let alone tell them exactly where it is?
Now it's clear -- that message was for the Administration.

More anecdotal evidence— we drive through central Virginia between 95 and 81 to avoid DC when going up north. We drive this route multiple times a year. Since 2015, there have been a very significant number of extremely large Trump signs near the entryways to various farms and near the very small towns there.
I didn’t see any as I passed through what I’ve come to think of as Trump country a few weeks back.
This is totally anecdotal, and the polls don’t show a drop off in Trump enthusiasm among supporters. But I do find it interesting.
Trump hasn't taken many questions so far after this morning, but he did take time out of his day to make what many could surmise as a veiled threat.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/26/u...lower-spy.htmlPresident Trump on Thursday morning told a crowd of staff from the United States Mission to the United Nations that he wants to know who provided information to a whistle-blower about his phone call with the president of Ukraine, saying that whoever did so was “close to a spy” and that “in the old days,” spies were dealt with differently.
The remark stunned people in the audience, according to a person briefed on what took place, who had notes of what the president said.
This is going to get darker.
