He'll get to mount a defense, as he should. He just won't be gifted the same courtesies and protections by those on his side of the aisle this time. Dragging anything out won't be an option.

The Daily Podcast. Very often excellent podcasts. This one is a must listen.

    This episode contains strong language.

It was always going to be a tense day in Washington. In the baseless campaign to challenge Joe Biden’s victory, Wednesday had been framed by President Trump and his allies as the moment for a final stand.
But what unfolded was disturbing: A mob, urged on by the president, advanced on the Capitol building as Congress was certifying the election results and eventually breached its walls.
Today, the story of what happened from Times journalists who were inside the Capitol.

Giuliani will be busy with his own defense, having called for “trial by combat” earlier this week.

Heh. Well for starters Rudy “trial by combat” G is a material witness and may have legal problems of his own.

Re: Lin Wood, it’s mind-boggling to me that the FBI isn’t currently in his living room.

His team from the first impeachment bailed on him so his options are limited.

Per my earlier post, I don't get it. It's not that inequivalent to the Capitol police standing back and watching as the rioters are let in the building.

Where did Lin Wood even come from? I knew he repped Jewell and the JB parents but where along the way did he radicalize and how did he end up like this w/ Trump?

Not sure if this is the right place for this (or perhaps I should post it multiple places as everyone should read it) - the transcript of Coach K's comments today about what happened in DC - definitely worth a read:

As speculated by several posters, the US Attorney in Atlanta that resigned for forced out. That was only Monday but it seems like a lifetime ago.

White House Forced Out U.S. Attorney Amid Effort to Overturn Election in Georgial

“They were desperately trying to find evidence for lawsuits that were about to be thrown out of court,” the Georgia official said. “They kept telling us that, ‘You need to give us the evidence’ and the truth is there isn’t any evidence to give.”

It got lost in the DC story but The GA SoS had to be escorted out of the building after a pro-Trump mob surrounded it and were looking for him.

As more details come out about the terrorist attack of 1/6/21 it gets even more horrific than it appeared in real time. It’s tempting to look at the pictures of these oafs in Viking hats or Chewbacca panties and treat the event as a clownish prank. Those guys may be clowns but they were not the only ones there - they were just the only ones dumb enough to livestream it. Some of these other folks had tactical military equipment, knowledge of the layout of the building, and specific objectives in mind.

Per NYT (paywalled so not linked), one of the videos that appeared to show a security officer backing away from the terrorists was actually him leading them in the wrong direction from the unsecured Senate chamber. We came within a few minutes of the Senate and the Vice President being taken by force and potentially executed.

There can be no quarter given to anyone who was involved in this. None. This wasn’t a stunt; it was an actual attempt to overthrow the US Government. I dunno how close it came to succeeding but just the fact that they got inside the building indicates it was MUCH closer than it should have been. Had they succeeded even in taking hostages, ***** undoubtedly would have invoked the Insurrection Act and declared himself ruler indefinitely, and the VP and Congressional leadership would have been unable to stop him. How much of this was spontaneous and how much of it was planned, and planned by whom, I dunno - but we damn well need to find out.

45% of GOP approve of the assault on the Capitol

I know dudog84 alluded to this earlier, with some other slices of the numbers, but 45% of GOP believe the assault on the Capitol was warranted, 43% disapprove...think about that...so tell me who controls that party.

I’d be interested in the link. But, put differently (and if the poll is constructed how I believe it would be), 57% of respondents who self-identify as being Republican are not willing to say they disapprove of what happened at the Capitol on Wednesday.

Trump supporters with guns and zip ties show up in KY Capitol looking for Mitch. I hope all the targets of these people are taking precautions. The plan to take Whitmer hostage, the people looking for Pence and others. I hate to say it but at some point some of these people are going to be successful.
