I'd like to take a moment to thank awhom111 for this thread and the constant updates.

After looking at a couple of pages I felt somewhat depressed. Sure, these young men are chasing their dream of getting paid to play, but it's akin to a youngster who aspires to be President of the United States and ends up becoming the County Dog Catcher. A quick look at the stats shows none of these players are lighting it up and they're basically journeymen players overseas.

I guess I'm just curious why they continue to labor overseas when they have a degree from Duke.

A quick look at the stats shows none of these players are lighting it up and they're basically journeymen players overseas.

I guess I'm just curious why they continue to labor overseas when they have a degree from Duke.
I think that you may be overestimating the ease at which any Duke degree can just be magically turned into money, especially early in a career. There have been seven former Men's team players playing overseas this season. I am not sure if Shavlik has his degree, but presumably the other do.

Daniel Ewing basically considered himself retired as his family operates a small business, but he was intrigued by an aggressive pitch and offer that he got and decided to return. It's easy to see why Shavlik plays overseas considering his recent history of seven figure contracts in China even though he may now be done with that level. DeMarcus Nelson may be on the downswing of his career, but did manage to sign a long-term contract at presumably a pretty decent salary and would be hard-pressed to make more money doing anything else. He's only a few years removed from being in the conversation for the best perimeter defender outside the NBA. Kyle has just finished being a punchline in the NBA online community so it's natural for him to find some place where he can prove that he can still play at a decent level even if it's not the NBA. Ryan's probably got a more difficult decision because he seems to be able to perform decently overseas, but probably not to the level where he would either return to the NBA or reach an elite level overseas, which means that other considerations like his growing family come into play. Josh has played overseas every year since graduation and basically improved his reputation there every season. I saw an article where he originally planned on only playing a few years, but over time has realized that he wants to play as many seasons as he can. Because of his relationship with Kyrie, apparently he had a standing offer from the Cavaliers to play for them in Canton if he wanted, but he's done pretty well forging his own path. The Italian Second Division may not seem strong, but apparently the good foreigners there are often made more than those in the top division because they tend to have bigger roles in the team. Tyler's an interesting case since he basically tried the grad school/coaching path and then returned to playing. If that's something that he wants to continue doing, he has to prove himself at a lower level before playing at a decent level because of the big gap in his resume.

Generally speaking, there are a few main reasons I've seen given for players who keep playing overseas, even at lower levels. For a lot of them, especially those who keep improving their play after college, basketball is really their passion and all that they've ever known. Unless they become one of those magical players who play into their forties, they all know that at some point it will come to an end and want to play as long as they can. Transitioning from being a professional athlete to other professions is not as easy as it may sound, especially for athletes who are not stars and don't have a large number of connections to advance quickly. It's a completely different lifestyle and not every profession regards the time spent as an athlete as a plus for other careers so athletes often find themselves having to work their way up from the bottom competing with people who are a decade or more younger. Those whose post-playing career goals involve coaching generally find that having a successful playing career, even if it's not at the highest level, helps their resume.
