Haven't always been a fan of the man's politics and I'll always question his membership in the Keating 5 (a quaint scandal by today's standards) but to survive 5.5 years in the Hanoi Hilton speaks to the man's immeasurable character which was never in short supply. I'm genuinely distressed over his passing. I can recall during his run for the Presidency, everyone counted him out; the image of him walking through an airport on the way to a campaign stop with a newscaster's voice over stating that "McCain's Campaign is so moribund he's had to resort to carrying his own luggage." A man down, many times, but never, ever out.
