    RIP, Aretha...

Nothing incites bodily violence quicker than a Duke fan turning in your direction and saying 'scoreboard.'

And give her lots of RESPECT.

Wasn't good. Per AP Twitter account, she passed away today. RIP with R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

"Chain of Fools" was my favorite of hers.

RIP. So incredibly talented. Her cameo in Blues Brothers was one of my favorites, as were her performances of "My Country Tis of Thee" at the Obama inauguration and "Natural Woman" at the Kennedy Center.

    Concert at Duke

I recall seeing Aretha Franklin at a concert in the "Indoor Stadium" at Duke, but cannot locate date.
Best I can guess is perhaps spring of 1969, maybe if Joe College Weekend was still around.
    Anyone know??

I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!
What an icon! Her music will live on and on and on....

    Thank you Aretha.

Being a bit younger than some here, my introduction to Aretha was via The Blues Brothers and her 1985 Grammy Award winning song, Freeway of Love.

    RIP, Ms. Franklin.

One of my favorite performances of hers wasn't that long ago - singing Carole King's "Natural Woman" at the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors. Aretha is 73 here, and kills it. I love that she comes out on stage in an enormous fur and carrying her purse.

There's apparently a reason she carried her purse on stage.

On the counter in front of her, next to her makeup mirror and hairbrush, were small stacks of hundred-dollar bills. She collects on the spot or she does not sing. The cash goes into her handbag and the handbag either stays with her security team or goes out onstage and resides, within eyeshot, on the piano. “It’s the era she grew up in—she saw so many people, like Ray Charles and B. B. King, get ripped off,” a close friend, the television host and author Tavis Smiley, told me. “There is the sense in her very often that people are out to harm you. And she won’t have it. You are not going to disrespect her.”
Someone above mentioned Aretha in The Blues Brothers. One of my favorite movie scenes ever.

On another sad note, Matt "Guitar" Murphy died just 2 months ago.

And had been suffering from dementia for a great while before he passed. He did not have an easy stretch at the end.

A friend of mine posted this on facebook:

She certainly had it and certainly used it.

Edit: Don't know how to make the image just show up here. It's her quote "Being a singer is a natural gift. It means I'm using to the highest degree possible the gift that God gave me to use. I'm happy with that." with a great image of her letting it out.

To me, that's Aretha...a monstrous talent...that "she makes it look easy" kind of talent....and she didn't waste it.

Aretha fans should check out "Amazing Grace", a documentary that just came out on DVD last week. It covers the recording of her gospel album live in a Southern California church in 1972. Sydney Pollack was in charge, for some reason it was never put together for release until now.
