When did basketball players start attacking "downhill" every time they drive to the basket? Unless there is a new mound at the center logo of b-ball courts that no one told me about it makes no sense. Many eons ago I'm sure some analyst or coach first sprinkled the term in to metaphorically describe the apparent ease with which a particular player attacked the basket. But a few years ago - not sure when - announcers started using it constantly as a synonym for dribbling in the direction of the basket. I keep waiting for them to tell me when the players run uphill to get back to level.

Football announcers do this as well.

I confess to using this. It replaced East/West and North/South in my sports lexicon.

This happened right around the same time that all basketball players sprouted wings, and we measured the span of those instead of measuring more suitable appendages.

Oh what?! I love the word "gibberish"! No one with an Irish grandmother hates "gibberish" it's a cultural staple. Along with "leppin' and jumpin' " when the kids get too rambunctious in the basement rec room.
Nothing incites bodily violence quicker than a Duke fan turning in your direction and saying 'scoreboard.'

I hate to hear that the outfielder is "honing in" on a fly ball.

The infer/imply misuse also ticks me off (as do many things).

Also one of my pet peeves. And similar to those who misuse “I” as an object, people who misuse “infer” seem to be trying to give off an air of sophistication.

I *think* I know another reason you're fond of that word.
