"impact" as a verb is an abomination.

In healthcare, impacts are no fun as a noun either.

So, Mark Williams didn’t impact Duke’s victory?

Also my husband’s pet peeve. That along with “athleticism” and the popular stock analyst’s term “constructive”, as in “I am constructive about this stock.”

    What’s wrong with athleticism?

“He’s relied too much on his athleticism in the past.” Not fine?

My husband thinks it adds syllables that don’t mean much...he would prefer “athletic ability” (which I have pointed out has more total syllables). I do not share his aversion to the word, but I do agree with him on “impact” as a verb and “constructive” the way it’s used by stock analysts.

The misuse of the word "would" is now officially out of control...is anyone doing anything about it?

Top publications which actually use editors seem to be immune, but every day on bulletin boards and elsewhere I read something along the lines of "I wish I would have bought that car," or we wish he wouldn't have gone to Florida." WTF I ask!

Fine. Allow me to reiterate the same sentiment about use of “golf” as a verb.

If you are Dick Vitale, you add a syllable by saying "ath-a-let-i-cism"

Impact as a verb is a handy way to avoid mixing up "effect" vs "affect".

A little mental discipline can effect a course that will properly affect the issue.
