My husband thinks it adds syllables that don’t mean much...he would prefer “athletic ability” (which I have pointed out has more total syllables). I do not share his aversion to the word, but I do agree with him on “impact” as a verb and “constructive” the way it’s used by stock analysts.

Top publications which actually use editors seem to be immune, but every day on bulletin boards and elsewhere I read something along the lines of "I wish I would have bought that car," or we wish he wouldn't have gone to Florida." WTF I ask!
