America only works if you boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh.

Let me suggest, Hendrix's take on All Along the Watchtower.

Yes, there’s gas in the car.

Promised Land by Chuck Berry is a great rocking travel song.

I’ve Been Everywhere by Hank Snow is too.

    Though it’s cold and lonely
    In the deep, dark night,
    I can see paradise
    By the dashboard light . . . .

    An oldie but a goodie:

"We are not provided with wisdom, we must discover it for ourselves, after a journey through the wilderness which no one else can take for us, an effort which no one can spare us, for our wisdom is the point of view from which we come at last to regard the world." --M. Proust

I heard East Bound and Down by Jerry Reed on XM just now. Even though it was for a goofy movie, that’s a good driving song.

If it's melancholy you're after, go for Springsteen's Stolen Car.

I love that song and I love melancholy but that’s not my go to when I want to have fun driving with the windows down. Highway 29 is melancholy like only Springsteen can do tragic/melancholy

Same for Mr. State Trooper off Nebraska but this Steve Earle Cover is more like a driving tune for me. Steve on the Gibson and Michael McAdam on the Tele

In my book, road songs, like Homeward Bound are a different category for another day. There are some intersections like , “6-days on the Road” and possibly “On the Road Again”

Restless Youthful Angst is another category that can intersect with both. I fear the connection between cars and restlessness my be lost on current and future generations though. Here’s a couple I like a lot:

Steve Earle - Someday (also a cool cover by Shawn Colvin on Cover Girl)
    https://youtu.be/cGKuhUpV-bk

Asheville’s own David Wilcox - Saturday They’ll all be Back Again
    https://youtu.be/TUUtSqP5Zwk

Also Eye of the Hurricane by DW (although he’s said the song is about addiction)
