Just to round out the legal situation for minor league players, here is a 2014 commentary by Nathanial Grow at Fangraphs. This is dated but relevant. He is commenting on the likelihood that the Supreme Court would hear a minor leaguers' claim that their salary system was a combination in restraint of trade as defined by the Sherman Act. The Court later declined to hear the case, but Grow's description of the system and its unfairness remains valid and is worth a read.

MLBPA moves to unionize the minors.

The Major League Baseball Players Association, which has represented major leaguers in matters of collective negotiations and labor law since 1966, is seeking to do the same for the thousands of players who annually toil in the minor leagues for notoriously low pay.

The MLBPA has sent authorization cards to current minor leaguers asking them to designate the union as their official collective bargaining representative, according to Joon Lee of ESPN and Evan Drellich of The Athletic.
