Exactly. Mike does not appear to be a particularly savvy basketball executive. Perhaps if he had to attend classes at UNC and actually achieve a LEGITIMATE 2.5 GPA or higher he might have permanently increased his brainpower. But alas, he did not.

Former professional fighter, got injured and became a bouncer/server in a high end, suburban Chicago steakhouse. He knows MJ well from the back room poker parties/bacchanals in the back room. He has many interesting stories about MJ, none of which are fit for a family oriented webstie.

Some people that were close to the Cheat program once told me that MJ thought of himself as a near scratch golfer. However he was nearer to a 12-15 handicaper. It was routine for the guys that MJ played with(hustlers) to let him win a few holes or even matches. Then the bets would go way up and they would take him for a ride. They said he wasn't the smartest cookie in the bakery. Not surprising the way he runs the Hornets. GoDuke!

He made so much money during his playing career, through salary and endorsements, that 99.9% of us would have generational wealth. To his credit, he didn't blow it all as many pro athletes do.

Sure as hell not dumb. Took his talent to the highest level. Other than what has been reported as a gambling problem (which he seemingly could afford) he has stayed out of trouble. Also has, for an athlete of his magnitude, stayed below the press radar. Yes, not Duke, but as good as can otherwise be..

I agree with this. It sounds like Michael is finally realizing he needs help, and he is confiding in someone he knows and trusts that also has experience, to help the Hornets get on track. Should be interesting this off season. We'll know soon enough if this was a good move or another blunder.

As far as golfing is concerned, I think he was probably closer to about a 6 or a 7, but suffered from delusions of grandeur.

Yeah, Jordan has done quite well for himself financially off the court. He seems to have pretty darn good business sense: you don't wind up an owner of a major professional sports team by being dumb.

But he's always been a poor talent evaluator, and has never really seemed to have the temperament for managing a team. And it often has to do with his affection for UNC. He was pissed that the Bulls drafted Scottie Pippen over former UNC player Joe Wolf, for example. Later, he traded a young Richard Hamilton to the Pistons for Jerry Stackhouse. Sports management seems to be the one glaring weakness for Jordan, as he hasn't been able to translate his business success elsewhere into NBA success in the front office - either as a GM or owner.

That being said, I don't know whether Kupchak is a good or bad hire. I think a lot of what went down in LA had to do with the man above Kupchak (Jim Buss). I think Kupchak did a pretty decent job in building around Bryant after the O'Neal/Bryant relationship faded. Unfortunately, towards the end, the management got in a bit of a power struggle, and the team didn't do a good job of managing the end of Bryant's career (as opposed to, say, the way Boston handled the near-end of Garnett/Pierce/Rondo's careers).

I was impressed with their patience with us, cause we were terrible golfers. Of course, him waiting for us to take futile swipes at the ball gave him plenty of time to graciously sign autographs for the other folks on the course.

(My friend and I would not give in and ask for autographs. It’s against Duke and NCSU code to get autographs from unc athletes.)
