There were physicians at the time who were confident that it was physically impossible for a human to run a mile in under four minutes.
Maybe it's because they were bleeding their patients too much?
Sir Roger Bannister, who broke the unbreakable barrier of 4 minutes in the mile, has died at 88.
The mile record had stood for about 9 years in 1954...and then Sir Roger's record lasted less than 2 months.
He was knighted for his medical work, not his athletic feat (feet?). Among other things, he developed the first test for anabolic steroids.
Must have been quite a man.
