Jeff Van Gundy has his assistants for the next round of qualifiers:

Court coaches have been named for the other U18 team and both should have a chance to move up the bench in the coming years.

The craziest tryouts continue again this year as the USA U17 Girl's team will have to whittle down from 172 to 12:

We now have a final roster for the USA U18 Women's Team:
    https://www.usab.com/news-events/new...eam-named.aspx

The U17 roster has gone down from 158 to 18, but the final cuts are still a couple days away.

It turns out that Zion will not be in tryouts this week, so Joey will be our current rep:
    https://www.usab.com/news-events/new...tc-starts.aspx

Mike Brey will help out with court coaching during the tryouts, which could put him in contention down the line for one the bench jobs.

Antonio Vrankovic was called into Croatia's training camp ahead of Qualifiers. Their team is in a poor position right now, so this is all business with six NBA players participating.

Joey did not make the cut from 33 to 18:
    https://www.usab.com/news-events/new...finalists.aspx

This team feels relatively well-built to withstand early entry next summer so there may not be too many available roster spots next year.

The USA U18 Boys' team has been named:

There should be some recruiting interest in this at least.

Sofia Roma is expected to contend for a spot on Puerto Rico's national team. It will be an awkward fit school-wise, especially since she already pulled out of last year's squad for school reasons, but the team's qualification for the world stage was an incredible story and they would be a stronger team with her post presence, which is their biggest area of weakness.

Jeff Van Gundy has had to deal with a lot of turnover player-wise, but he has also had to replace coaches who got offers that prevented them from staying with USA Basketball and he has made his latest new appointment:

Amile will be in another USA training camp ahead of their final two qualifiers in the first round. It's interesting since he will technically still be under an NBA contract through the first game.
    https://www.usab.com/news-events/new...ng-roster.aspx

The USA U18 Boys' team made sure that there were no issues in their second game, leading Panama 43-0 after the first quarter on the way to a 118-26 win.

Sofia Roma has been named to the preliminary list for Puerto Rico's national team this summer as they have multiple competitions:

The USA U17 Boys' tryout roster was announced as there are bound to be some future Blue Devils there:
    https://www.usab.com/news-events/new...-tc-start.aspx

The USA U18 Boys team finished up Group A play with a 115-71 win over Puerto Rico. Bill Self got his guy plenty of time as the firm, but not overwhelming margin for most of the game meant that we continue to have an idea of the rotation in tough games. In the loss, Giovanni Santiago had 17 points, Dyondre Dominguez had 12 points, and Jose Placer had 11 points.
    http://www.fiba.basketball/americas/...A#tab=boxscore

Also in the group, the Dominican Republic beat Panama 90-54. In the win, Antonio Bonilla had 17 points, Alanzo Frink, Matthew Herasme, and David Jones each had 12 points, Lester Quinones had 10 points and 6 rebounds, and Joel Soriano had 10 points.

Standings: United States 3-0, Puerto Rico 2-1, Dominican Republic 1-2, Panama 0-3

Canada made sure that they won the group as Andrew Nembhard had 19 points and 7 assists and Emanuel Miller had 17 points and 7 rebounds in their 97-60 win over Chile. Maxwell Lorca had 11 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.

    Standings: Canada 3-0, Argentina 2-1, Chile 1-2, Ecuador 0-3

The knockout round starts on Thursday and the quarterfianls actually the most important phase as the four winners will qualify for 2019 U19 World Championship.

    Bracket:

    Dominican Republic vs Argentina
    Puerto Rico vs Chile
    Panama vs Canada

The USA U18 team qualified for next year's World Championship with ease as the beat Ecuador 132-55. There was plenty of garbage time so contributions were spread out pretty well.
    http://www.fiba.basketball/americas/...r#tab=boxscore

Argentina ended any questions about their vulnerability for this game with a fast start and 87-70 win over the Dominican Republic. Alanzo Frink had 27 points and 7 rebounds and Lester Quinones had 26 points and 6 rebounds in the loss. Maxwell Lorca had 13 points and 11 rebounds as Chile was on the verge of history, but Puerto Rico did enough in the second half to win 68-65. In the win, Alejandro Vasquez had 23 points, Giovanni Santiago had 12 points, and Jose Placer had 10 points. Canada will be ready to defend their world crown after a 105-39 win over Panama. The lopsided margin gave some other players some opportunities as Joel Brown had 14 points.

The USA U18 Boys' team knew that they were getting their first real test in the semifinal and they kept the margin comfortable enough in a 104-92 win behind Quentin Grimes and Coby White. Francisco Caffaro led Argentina with 22 points and 6 rebounds as he faced some guys he may see again in college.
    http://www.fiba.basketball/americas/...a#tab=boxscore

The other semifinal saw hosts Canada survive Puerto Rico 95-89 as Emanuel Miller had 31 points and 14 rebounds, Andrew Nembhard had 14 points and 17 assists, and Tyrese Samuel had 11 points and 7 rebounds. In the loss, Jorge Torres had 21 points and 12 rebounds, Alejandro Vasquez had 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists, Isaiah Palermo had 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists, and Giovanni Santiago had 12 points. That sets up a finals rematch from the preceding cycle where the last Canada U18 faded down the stretch against the United States only to come back the next summer and famously take the world championship.
    http://www.fiba.basketball/americas/...a#tab=boxscore

Earlier in the day, the consolation playoffs started. The Dominican Republic beat Ecuador 102-70 after a strong second half. In the win, Lester Quinones had 20 points, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists, Joel Soriano had 19 points and 9 rebounds, Alanzo Frink had 18 points and 6 rebounds, and Rafael Rubel had 10 points. Maxwell Lorca had 14 points and 15 rebounds as Chile had a tough time with Panama before winning 67-61.

    http://www.fiba.basketball/americas/...a#tab=boxscore
