Carol Channing dies at age 97

Because I grew up on cartoons, Carol Channing was always a bit of a caricature. Probably the same for many people my age and younger. In fact, the only reason I became aware of this is because I clicked on an article that Chumley (the walrus) had died.

But she really was an icon.

I saw Channing as Dolly Levy in a touring production of "Hello, Dolly!" back in the 90's. She was well into her 70's, and when I saw her comes down the big staircase into Harmonia Gardens for the big title number, I was worried she would trip on her monstrous costume, fall down 20 steps, and break her neck in front of the audience. But, old pro that she was, she completely pulled it off. I suspect she could probably have done it blindfolded.

I've never been a big fan of her voice, but I love her attitude, charisma, and stage presence. One of the titans of American musical theater.
