I’ve come to understand capitalizing on that simple formula isn’t a possibility for many for different reasons but have also come to understand that too many don’t capitalize on it that should — or rob it of its power for non-essential purchases.

I agree with the posts about starting to put away money early - from day one, make sure that you are at least contributing enough to a 401k to receive the full match that your company is offering.
Make sure that you are on the same page with your spouse about financial priorities before you get married. Make sure that you can have open conversations about the topic and can agree on priorities, as well as a mechanism to settle disputes if they arise in the future. The person making the money when you get married might not be the person making the money later, and kids complicate things a lot.
I wonder if and how money talk within families is changing generationally. I know of MANY cases decades ago where wives did not know how much money their husbands were making (this back in the day when far fewer women worked).
