What's the trick/method to read notifications more than once?

When someone leaves feedback, I see a notification number - I hit the drop down arrow and read it. But once the notification number is gone, and I hit the down arrow: I see nothing.

Previously read feedback is irretrievable? What am I missing?

Two tabs to the right of "Notifications," click on "Settings." Scroll down to "Latest Comments Received," and you can see the last 5 pieces of feedback left on your posts.
