    Duke Dunk Report

I noticed that the Duke media guide lists dunks as a stat. So since this year's team is so dunkosterous, I thought it might be fun to track the team's progress.

Below is a list showing the past 31 year's worth of dunks. I would note that if you add up the individual dunks in the guide, it doesn't always add up to the "official" total for the year, so the table includes two columns, the "official count" and the "individual count." The only year with a major difference is the 2005-06 season, during which the team either had 79 dunks or 122 dunks, depending on which total you believe.

    Code:
Year	Off Ct	Ind Ct	Games	Dpg	NCAA finish
    1999	162	163	39	4.15	2
    1992	146	146	36	4.06	1
    2001	130	131	39	3.33	1
    1990	126	126	38	3.32	2
    2015	124	124	39	3.18	1
    2003	118	118	33	3.58	16
    2007	117	117	33	3.55	64
    2011	114	114	37	3.08	16
    1989	113	117	36	3.14	4
    2002	113	113	35	3.23	16
    2000	113	113	34	3.32	16
    1991	112	113	39	2.87	1
    2012	112	112	34	3.29	64
    2009	111	111	37	3.00	16
    2016	110	110	36	3.06	16
    1994	109	113	34	3.21	2
    1998	106	104	36	2.94	8
    1993	106	106	32	3.31	32
    2013	102	102	36	2.83	8
    1988	99	99	35	2.83	4
    2008	97	97	34	2.85	32
    2014	97	99	35	2.77	64
    2004	95	95	37	2.57	4
    1986	88	88	40	2.20	2
    2010	86	86	40	2.15	1
    2017	84	84	37	2.27	32
    2006	79	122	36	2.19	16
    1997	78	78	33	2.36	32
    1995	76	80	31	2.45	n/a
    2005	74	76	33	2.24	16
    1987	69	69	33	2.09	16
    1996	63	67	31	2.03	64
While there were plenty of Duke teams that succeeded while playing below the rim, the teams with the top five Duke dunk performances all made the NCAA championship game, including three of our five champions (although in part that's because those teams played more games).

For this year, I've been counting in the official box scores, and this is how we've done:

    Elon: 7 dunks
    Utah Valley: 9 dunks
Michigan State: 5 dunks (probably would have been more if Marvin hadn't gotten hurt)

Total, through three games: 21 dunks (7 per game).

The record is 162 dunks (or 163) in 1998-99, an average of 4.15 per game. If this year's team continues to dunk apace, we'll shatter that record.

If there's interest, and if I feel like it, I'll continue to update this during the season.

Fun thread, Kedsy. I'd like to see you continue. Maybe not every game but once a week?

Yeah I mentioned this I think during the first game. This team is just so athletic as a whole. In the past we had 1 or 2 guys who would do most of the dunking (MP1-3 for example) but this season we got big time athletes on the floor at all times.

I think maybe we now know why JJ never g0t that NCAA Championship ring (And why Grayson will get two)

Agree, fun thread. It would be interesting to see how dunk totals correlate with steals and transition offense, since imho that's where the best dunks come from! I loved the post-game clip where Grayson talked about being in Javin's ear on that breakaway: "Go dunk, go dunk!"

I think it is worth noting that the early season dunk pace -- when we are playing teams that are often undersized and not nearly as athletic -- is likely to be significantly higher than our dunk pace against ACC competition. So, while it is fun to think about 7 dunks per game right now, I would be quite surprised if we could maintain that pace playing legit NCAA tournament contending teams.

Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?

I think that's important...without likely the team's most prolific dunker?

Very interesting... More dunks= better chance at a title. I'll now be counting dunks all season.

Very interested! Thanks for starting this thread. Dunk - isn't that a great word? I like our chances for breaking the season dunk record this year. Dangerous Duke dunkers decimating defenses!

I believe Mason Plumlee holds the record for career total and single season (87 in 2013) dunks. May that also be broken this season? Looking at you Mr Bagley.

I think Jason "some semi-random quote" Evans is correct. Once we start facing better and bigger teams we are likely to see that average go down. We probably won't average more than 6.5 per game, no way we keep it at the full 7 :-)

Checks notes ... yup, #2 on this list is indeed Duke's point guard!

I think we'll be seeing a lot of dunks this year, and I hope this thread continues throughout the season. Good stuff.

I think Trevon's ability to dunk is actually what gives this team such a good chance of breaking the record. Fast breaks from the point guard aren't going to end with lay-ups as long as Trevon is on the court. Also, his baseline cut and slam off of a pass from Javin against Utah Valley is another example of a play that would have been a lay-up for virtually any other point guard that became a monster dunk from Trevon. Yeah. this team is fun to watch.
Who needs a moral victory when you can have a real one?

Agreed. I think his ability to lead the break is already impressive, save for that one late-game mistake against MSU. He's only going to get better at it.

Does anyone know where Grayson stands on either list? His best single season effort (his Sophomore year I assume) and his overall dunk total? Might be another list he has a chance of appearing on. Or maybe he doesn't dunk nearly as much as I recall.
