I noticed that the
Duke media guide lists dunks as a stat. So since this year's team is so dunkosterous, I thought it might be fun to track the team's progress.
Below is a list showing the past 31 year's worth of dunks. I would note that if you add up the individual dunks in the guide, it doesn't always add up to the "official" total for the year, so the table includes two columns, the "official count" and the "individual count." The only year with a major difference is the 2005-06 season, during which the team either had 79 dunks or 122 dunks, depending on which total you believe.

While there were plenty of Duke teams that succeeded while playing below the rim, the teams with
the top five Duke dunk performances all made the NCAA championship game, including three of our five champions (although in part that's because those teams played more games).
For this year, I've been counting in the official box scores, and this is how we've done:
Elon: 7 dunks
Utah Valley: 9 dunks
Michigan State: 5 dunks (probably would have been more if Marvin hadn't gotten hurt)
Total, through three games: 21 dunks (7 per game).
The record is 162 dunks (or 163) in 1998-99, an average of 4.15 per game. If this year's team continues to dunk apace, we'll shatter that record.
If there's interest, and if I feel like it, I'll continue to update this during the season.
