That must have been the high for that day because reports I saw claimed a low temperature of -28F with a wind chill of -55ish.
[redacted] them and the horses they rode in on.

Forget thread length and hitler on the internet.

If the thread goes long enough, DD will soon appear speaking of beer!

That was the temp at 11:34 central time. It's a little hard to see, but there is a link to a -56 story:

The coldest temperature early Thursday was minus 56 degrees in Cotton, Minnesota. That was just a few degrees short of the state's all-time record low of minus 60 degrees set in Tower Feb. 2, 1996.

Antarctica and northernmost Alaska were warmer. Of course, it is summertime in Antarctica.

    FWIW:

How polar vortex blasts are tied to global warming

Greenhouse gas emissions from human activities have warmed the globe by about 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree C) over the past 50 years. However, the Arctic has warmed more than twice as much. Amplified Arctic warming is due mainly to dramatic melting of ice and snow in recent decades, which exposes darker ocean and land surfaces that absorb a lot more of the sun’s heat.

Because of rapid Arctic warming, the north/south temperature difference has diminished. This reduces pressure differences between the Arctic and mid-latitudes, weakening jet stream winds...Large north/south undulations in the jet stream generate wave energy in the atmosphere. If they are wavy and persistent enough, the energy can travel upward and disrupt the stratospheric polar vortex.

Sometimes this upper vortex becomes so distorted that it splits into two or more swirling eddies...These “daughter” vortices tend to wander southward, bringing their very cold air with them and leaving behind a warmer-than-normal Arctic.

I thought we couldn't talk about public policy?

IOW, we can't talk about how we should respond to observable changes in the climate patterns, but true, we don't want to hijack the recruiting thread (which ironically I just did).

Literally only in the United States (thanks, energy lobbyists). For, the entire rest of the world, climate change is accepted as scientific fact.

It's a recruiting thread where we discuss which recruits are running hot and cold.
