    Early 2020 nba mock draft

Hey guys! First time poster but long time lurker and fan but I wanted to get some other takes on this zags blog article. It has two of our guys selected in the first round in Wendell Moore and Obviously Vernon Carey but it has them slated to go 23 and 24 with Moore actually being picked ahead of Carey. This had me baffled as I assumed Carey was a lock for at least a lottery slot.

Wow, I am legitimately shocked. He was considered a 100% lock to FSU prior to reclassifying. Props to him for staying home and trying to put a lesser-known program on the map. As for Kentucky, their fans must be freaking out after all these misses. Theyre certainly not accustomed to losing elite recruits to the likes of Georgia, Memphis, and Washington.

Welcome to the world of posting!

Mike Schmitz at ESPN is a respected scout and can evaluate talent as well as anyone. That being said, it is absurdly early to start taking stock of the 2020 NBA Draft. At this time last year, Ja Morant would have elicited a "who?" from all but the most well-traveled scouts. Now Morant is a possible Top 5 picks in the 2019 NBA Draft.

I think we are going to see a lot from Vernon Carey at the McDonald's All-American game and the other all-star games. Wendell Moore may shine as well. His game - a jack of all trades, play on both ends of the floor - does not usually shine at the all-star games. It will be the practices, which are not open to the public, where Moore and Carey will likely turn some heads. And then, during the early part of the NCAA season, both of those players will receive a lot of attention. We saw Zion shoot up the draft boards this year after the first few games when people realized there was a lot more to his game than the highlight videos showed. On a much lesser scale, I anticipate some of the same will be true of Carey and Moore. Carey is going to be the focal point of the offense next year and may well end up averaging 20 and 10. Moore, if he can show a reliable or even above-average jumper, will also appeal to many as a 3-and-D or better type of player at the NBA level.

At this point, it's good to see both young men in the mix for top talent in their class.

Mannion could be the missing piece of a blockbuster Duke recruiting haul.

In an article yesterday, Mannion confirmed his commitment to Arizona.

    Welcome!

I like Wendell a lot (more than his average recruiting rank) and wouldn't be surprised if he ended up getting drafted ahead of Vernon. A lot of it is just that in the NBA these days, a wing with size, long arms, shooting and playmaking ability like Wendell is usually more valuable than a scoring big man with average wingspan (which limits his defensive potential) like Vernon. I agree that mid-20s projections feel low for the both of them, however. Still, it's really early, and I doubt the people doing those rankings want to be held to them; they know things will change.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but he confirmed his commitment despite the firing of the assistant coach. That has nothing to do with a possible change of heart if Miller was also fired. That said, there is probably no reason to get too invested in the possibility that he comes to Duke, but this article did not completely rule out that he might ask out of his LOI if the head coach was to change.

After reading some about Edwards' background (he's had a lot of personal tragedy), I'm not that surprised that he stayed close to home. This was from a UGa site before he committed:

I agree with a previous poster that I don't want Crean to start to have a lot of success with top recruits from Georgia, since that has been such a successful recruiting area for us in recent years. But I am still glad Edwards picked Georgia over Kentucky!

I am not a fan of Tom Crean at all, so I am doubtful he will be able to maximize the results from getting top end talent for one year. And he has such a knack for saying all the wrong things! Why just this past weekend...

Surely things like that will hurt him with recruiting.

Unfortunately for Carey, he is going to be constantly compared to Zion because hes a huge dude who plays all over the court. Which means everyone will be talking about how hes not as good. Again, its really unfair to him because he has the tools to be an excellent player in his own right.

I would guess that him falling in the draft projections has more to do with how the NBA continues to devalue big men. In terms of college production hes going to be a beast. Moore is also developing into more and more of a scorer. I initially thought of him as a defensive specialist, but it looks like hes become more than just a stopper.

Whoever said he was a lock to FSU was guessing.. and they even whiffed on the biggest gimme they'd ever get- Andrew Wiggins.

Crean has been working on him since he got the job at UGA. He sold him on DWade and Oladipo. Crean has recruited top talent before so this should come as no surprise.

not true... he inherited an absolute mess at IU because of Sampson.

I don't think Duke should be overly worried about Tom Crean and Georgia taking all the best players from the state. This recruitment seemed to have a lot of factors in its favor - the desire to be close to home, the fit between Edwards and Crean's track record with similar players. As Duke focuses on Brandon Boston, Walker Kessler, and Sharife Cooper, those factors are not going to be quite the same.

DBA, you've forgotten more than I'll ever know about recruiting, but there seem to be significant factors that potentially favor Walker Kessler's bringing his skills to Athens as well.

Walker Kessler: "I have some Georgia blood in me--a lot of it."

Walker speaks unabashedly about his love for UGA. Looks to me like he's well on his way to possibly becoming a DGD(Damn Good Dawg), but the allure of Duke and Coach K are powerful.

Don't think need to worry too much about Tom Crean. Adding Edwards is great for UGA, that's it... He is not some recruiting guru in Indiana, he cannot keep Indiana Kids in IU in past years, even lose Trey Lyles to Cal, which is furious for fans... We should worry little bit more about Penny's recruiting on South, he will be a big threat, since he is a former star and looks cool to high school kids...

Then let just hope Cole Anthony choose Oregon...

I beg to differ! I understand Kessler's familiar ties to Georgia. All I am saying is that Crean does not represent a sea change for recruiting in the state and that Duke has a good shot with Kessler, Boston, and Cooper (should the latter receive an offer).

is he a huge threat? no but he's a bigger threat to keep talent home than say Alabama, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma.

he turned off coaches in indiana. not recruiting indiana as well as he should doomed him. he was running all over the country looking for kids when there was the same or better right down the road... i think he's learned his lesson though.

those mocks are terrible. If Carey scores 18-20 ppg and 10 rpg as a freshman at duke like I think he will, he's not lasting past pick 10.

But Givony/ESPN has both James Wiseman and Jaden McDaniels in the top 3.

The projection for Vernon probably has to do with his lack of length and thus defensive potential, not just the fact that he is a big. I suspect Vernon goes higher especially if he can shoot threes in college.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is. He's a little old, and playing a doctor on TV doesn't really add pertinent experience.
