Really interesting Bobby, taken from a great tour.
I think that's exactly what Bobby had to do to prove his worth and carve out a space. From '65 into '68, Bobby was not doing that. Jerry had no need for a traditional rhythm guitarist. Bobby had to become Bobby Weird. Fortunately, he was well suited for the role and created an extremely unique guitar style. Nobody has ever played rhythm guitar like Bobby. In Bobby's case, it may be better called second guitar.

Jerry was back in Cameron last night.

The boys loved Duke. Bobby even wore a Duke shirt for a few years after the '78 show.

    Excellent on both counts.

    1. I *think* I saw them in the early 70s while I was at Duke.
    2. Then he's a friend of mine.

My "hazy" memory says Cameron as the only concerts I can remember at WW were associated with Joe College Weekend, which, IIRC, only lasted a couple (few?) years.

Good recall, Joe College Weekend on April 24, 1971 included The Grateful Dead, Beach Boys, Mountain, Butterfield Blues Band, and NRPS (w/ Garcia).

The Grateful Dead first played at Cameron on December 8, 1973.

That JCW line-up sounds amazing. Makes me wish I was 2 years older (yea, right )

Recalling concerts from the early/mid 70s are a tad difficult .

I completely understand! I might have seen Jerry Garcia play 200 times or 400 times. The best times are the only ones I'm certain about.

that was a looooooong fun day...I remember crawling back to my room where I could hear Leslie West at about 100 decibels even though he was about a mile away...

(People who enjoyed that day in Technicolor, and there were many, may want to check out Michael Pollan's How to Change Your Mind, quite a fascinating read).

Loved being at this show, nice one to come to from living in DC during college. John Mayer pre-show was fun.
