Greatest shot we’ve ever seen in golf

Watching replay of 2005 Masters now, Tiger just chipped in on 16, amazing!!
I remember Nicklaus with the 1-iron on 17 at Pebble that hit the pin, stopped stonied; Nicklaus making 40 footer on 16 at Masters in ?74?
Bubba Watson, in playoff, hooks 9 iron on 10 from the trees to make birdie and win. Then there’s Larry Mize beating Norman in playoff with long pitch in on 11 to win.
Ooh, forgot about (almost) Isao Aoki (sp?) holing out in Hawaiian Open to win (majors count alot more)!
    Thinking of shock/awe value here.
Sergio’s 6-iron in Ryder Cup (or was it a major) was huge.

Trying to come up with the golf version of Laettner’s shot or the Cardiac Pack beating Houston.

Nicklaus making the putt on 17 w/Jackie on the bag was special, too.

The Dwight Clark catch to beat my Cowboys comes to mind but is too painful, so it ain’t that

Food for thought. Feel free to chew on it. Golfwise Tiger’s chip-in, overall I’m split between that and “The Shot.”

Oh, fun. Some nominees (no particular order):

    (1) Bob Tway’s bunker shot to beat Greg Norman in the 1986 PGA.

    (2) Justin Leonard’s long putt at the ‘99 Ryder Cup at Brookline

    (3) Payne Stewart’s putt on 18 at Pinehurst to win the 1999 US Open

    (4) Jordan Spieth’s 3-wood to 18 at Chambers Bay in the 2015 US Open

    (5) Spieth’s “go get that” putt in the 2017 British Open

    (6) Non-major: Tiger’s “better than most” putt at TPC Sawgrass

    (7) Tiger‘a putt to get into the playoff at Torrey Pines in the 2008 US Open

    (8) Non-major: Tiger’s ace at TPC Scottsdale

    (9) Tom Watson’s chip-in on 17 at Pebble Beach in the 1982 US Open

And, of course, Gene Sarazen’s Shot Heard ‘Round the World double-eagle at 15 at Augusta. But I wasn’t alive for that one; some of y’all might have been.

I got a PM asking for YouTube links to be included, which I think is a great idea. It may be later today, or even tomorrow, before I can hunt them down to post mine. If anyone is inclined and can beat me to it, feel free.

A memorable shot, although not the best ever: Phil’s putt to win the 2004 Masters.

Tiger at Memorial 2012. Saw this one live. This hole was eating people alive this particular year.

Truthfully, I'd have to go with the tee shot for an ace on the 134 yard 14th hole of Catamount GC on October 3, 2019. I used a nine iron.

Now, after this commercial interruption, to more broadly recognized shots:

Number one for me is Tom Watson's chip-in on 17 at Pebble Beach in 1982 to defeat Jack Nicklaus. If Watson's shot doesn't go in or hit the pin, he makes four instead of two and, at best, there's a playoff. Nicklaus was in the clubhouse already and then Watson wrapped it up with a birdie on 18 to win by two shots.

Then second is Nicklaus's 18-foot putt on 17 to take the lead at the 1986 Masters, after he was supposed to be washed up as a competitive golfer, surely is up there.

Third is Tiger's amazing "logo chip" on 16 to take a two-shot lead over Chris DiMarco at the 2005 Masters. Tiger then bogeyed the last two holes to go to a playoff, which he won with a birdie on 10, the first playoff hole.

Didn't somebody win a tournament in a playoff with an ace a few years ago?

This one is not important, but how about Jack Nicklaus's grandson hitting a hole in one on the ninth hole at the Masters par three contest in 2018? He was carrying for Jack. The group included Watson and Player. For those who don't know, there is a tradition of letting the caddies all hit a ball at the ninth tee; most of them end up in the lake. This one, however, ended up in the hole!

Because he’s a friend of mine and because this ace led to Toms’ PGA championship, I’ll submit:

Thought Mize’s pitch-in to beat Norman you mentioned was most spectacular and Masters loss by Norman after I assumed he’d won was crushing.

Arnie needs some luv; give him driving par 4 at Cherry Hills to start 7- shot deficit comeback.

With all due respect to my friend TW, I don't think Chambers Bay should be on any top golf list - that course was a joke.

    https://seattle.cbslocal.com/2015/06...-chambers-bay/

Ian Poulter (+11, Tied for 54th)
“If this was a regular PGA tour event lots of players would have withdrawn and gone home on Wednesday, but players won’t do that for a major. They were simply the worst most disgraceful surface I have ever seen on any tour in all the years I have played.”

Henrik Stenson (+5, Tied for 27th)

“It’s borderline laughable at some of the greens and some of the pin positions, when we’re actually almost better off plugged in a bunker than being on the top of a ridge…And it’s pretty much like putting on broccoli.”

Rory McIlroy (E, Tied for 9th) – on hearing Stenson’s quote about the ‘broccoli-greens’

“I don’t think they’re as green as broccoli, I think they’re more like cauliflower”

Sergio Garcia (+3, Tied for 18th), an apparent basketball connoisseur:

“To me, it’s like playing the NBA Finals on a court that’s got holes and slopes and no backboard and things like that”

Louie Oosthazien (-4, Tied for 2nd), who would go on and tie a US Open record with a back-nine 29:

“There’s no grass on (the putting greens) so it’s just dead. There’s a few holes where it doesn’t look really, really good.’’

    Jordan Spieth (-5, Winner)

“This is the dumbest hole I’ve ever played in my life”

Gary Player – For someone who has probably seen more golf courses than any other pro; Hall of Famer Gary Player has a very unique perspective. The man, who’s nicknamed the International Ambassador of Golf, absolutely blasted the course and its designers:

“The worst golf course I might’ve ever seen in the 63 years as a professional golfer”
“This has been the most unpleasant golf tournament I’ve seen in my life.”
“The man who designed this golf course had to have had one leg shorter than the other. It’s hard to believe you see a man miss the green by one yard and the ball ends up 50 yards down in the rough.”
“There have never been so many people that missed the cut that are so happy to go home.”

Also with due respect (a) it doesn't take away from the quality of Spieth's three-wood, under pressure; and (b) I have played Chambers, and love it. It's no joke.

Tiger’s second from the bunker on 18 at the Canadian Open in 2000.

This is always the first one that comes to mind when this question gets asked. My Dad and I were watching together because they were up visiting and we were both just in awe.

Wasn’t a major, so I think it gets lost, but it’s an incredible shot from Tiger.

Watching CBS now while Tiger narrates his tee shot and putt at the 16th at last year’s Masters. I’ll throw that one in the mix:

Am I the only one conditioned to think, while watching these videos, alternatively, how much fun it would be to be in a crowd like that and how dangerous that is right now?
