Blackberry Farm Roasted Cherry Stout
Tried in Boone over the summer and was underwhelmed.
Nose is sour cherry.
Like over the summer, does not taste in any way like a stout.
Dark sour ale with cherry is a more apt description.
Enjoying more the second time around due to more informed expectations.
Can’t really recommend it, would not go so far as to suggest avoiding it.
We were lucky enough to have stayed at Blackberry Farm right when they were starting brewing. Initial impression was good with their focus on Belgian style ales.

Southern Tier Chokolat
Dessert first!
Smells like a thick, rich chocolate bar.
Not a sweet smell- an alluring dark chocolate.
If you like adult hot chocolate, Chokalot is really a “cold brew” experience.
All the hallmarks of a Southern Tier beer- exaggerated smell and taste.
It’s been a long time since I have had a large format Southern Tier beer for that reason- they are built to share.
Mouthfeel is exceptional, silky and all artisanal chocolate.
A really dry finish.
Chocolate echoes for days.
A great beer to share with friends.
Wise Man appears to have gone all-in on IPA offerings. In addition to their Mountain Calling (which is now getting some distribution in 16-ounce cans as far away as Raleigh, evidently), they have a handful of other variations on the style. Their Set the Tempo session IPA is quite good. Only 4.8% ABV and 50 IBU, it has a really great nose of citrus and very good balance between the citrus and hops.
If you want something "bigger," go with their Body Electric. It's a New England style DIPA. Much higher-gravity at 7.5% ABV, and much more hoppiness at 90 IBUs. Pours a hazy orange-brown, and has a lot of good "bite" from the hops. Very, very enjoyable.
As an aside from the IPA discussion, they have just tapped their "Winter Wave" seasonal. It's a Belgian-style winter ale, which pours a color almost the color of a brown ale (maybe a touch lighter; conceivably like a trippel), even though they call it an "amber." Nice winter spices, clocking in at 4.9% ABV and 30 IBUs.
More solid beer from one of W-S's newest breweries.

2XMAS-Southern Tier Brewing Company
Spiced double ale.
Double what?
This was a trader from dpslaw at the GT tailgate and I intended to wait until the Christmas season to celebrate and sip it and Thursday night sounded about right.
Thanks!
Pour was a golden-amber with a small, tan head. Smells like cold, spiced cider. Tastes of dark caramel, cinnamon and cloves with a pinch of ginger and a few orange peel shavings. They claim they also added fig paste and cardamom but not sure I'd ever guess that. No IBUs revealed but I'll guess 30. The ABV is 8% so I guess this most closely fits in the imperial amber ale category, if one exists . Pairing? Why some figgy pudding sounds perfect. So bring me some right now! I'd have a slice of fruitcake with this, too.

Anyone tasted Evil Twin's Molotov Surprise? On tap about 1.5 blocks from my office so I might treat myself to a half pint on the way home today if any favorable reviews come in this afternoon.

This year's BBA Backwoods Bastard has arrived in four-packs to a Harris Teeter near you. Well, near *me*, anyway!
Looking forward to tasting this year's version.
