Think we can complete a 25 days of Christmas/Advent beer log? It'd be a nice lead-up to Hanukkah, too, this year. I'll start tonight.

Post-Utah funeral trip, sipping Squatters Reserve Series Outer Darkness Russian imperial stout. Picked it up in Park City in August. Tasty, but Sexual Chocolate and Silent Night are better. Touch bitter in the aftertaste.
"Amazing what a minute can do."

Sniff...first year in a few I've not been gifted a Beer Dispensary beer advent calendar.

I am choosing to look at it that Christmas came early this year via devildeac's northwestern adventure.

Buy twenty four 12oz seasonals and a 750ml Belgian treat as #25.

Wait, I haven't been out to the northwest in 7.5 years.

Hmmm, cross country beer odyssey is now in the planning stages.

    That'd work especially well.

On the first day of Christmas/Advent/Hanukkah, my true love/self/dpslaw gave to me:

    Our Special Ale-Anchor Brewing Company

    42nd annual edition.

Pour was a dark, dark, clear brown with a modest mocha head. Chocolate and caramel are the lead-off hitters with more chocolate, a bit of coffee, some more caramel and a pinch of spruce/pine in the middle of the order and perhaps a bit of cinnamon, nutmeg and pecan at the bottom of the order. I'll guess IBUs of 30 as it stands about halfway between a brown ale and a porter. ABV on bottle is 6.5% which is a bit higher than I recall from past years but I don't think I've tasted this for 2-3 years or more. Pair with a beef brisket, a large amount of onion rings on top of a green bean casserole and a bowl of figgy pudding.

    Just in case..

I noticed this article yesterday and thought I'd share it here.

While describing some of these products as beer, may be a stretch, I thought
the intent of the article is key.

If anyone is in the habit of paying attention to ingredients in food, there may be
a few useful pearls here, I was surprised by a few.

Interesting list, from real Ycch, Beers to 3 beers I've had in the last 12-18 months. Thanks for finding/sharing.

    Agreed, good share, interesting read.

Started strong enough (beware GMOs!), as the list grew it was more of a "too much sugar/calories" in beer article.

The Guinness / isinglass has gotten such interesting publicity over the past couple of years.

Not that the commentary wasn't valid, I would not conflate Guinness, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Bigfoot with Bud Strawberry Rita.

Anyone else wish these click list articles would just be a scrolling single page?

Yea, you could put many, many ales on the "too many carbs/sugar/calories/ABV" list.

The Ponysaurus Export Stout I tasted and reviewed recently from my November beer club 4 pack reminded me of a Guinness but I haven't had a Guinness stout in a decade or more I'd guess.

Agreed on the click list articles should be as you stated.

Brueprint Cabernet Barrel aged scotch ale with Brett

Smells like red wine with a hint of barnyard.

Really jammy like a young red wine, very smooth.
Finish is almost port or sherry like with strong oak flavour.

Only have one other bottle. Won't last a year to see how it ages.
    May have to find more.

    Highly, highly recommended!

On the second day of Christmas/Advent/Hanukkah, my true love gave to me:

    Imperial Stout-Olde Hickory Brewing

Well, I really didn't drink this tonight as I'm working so I divided it over Wednesday and Thursday nights. And, my true love really didn't give this to me. It was a beer mule named ricks68 and he really didn't give it to me either as the sticker said $12 on the cap so that's what I paid him at Matthewgate, IIRC. On to the beer.

Pour was a dark mahogany with a small, mocha head. Heavily roasted grain scents tickled the nares and some semi-sweet chocolate, burnt toffee, dollop of black strap molasses and a splash of espresso caressed the taste buds. The added honey sweetened the deal a bit and saved this from being a hop monster at 86 IBUs from Columbus, Cluster, Centennial and Cascade hops. A massive grain bill was brewed to an ABV of 10.6% and it felt boozey, even without and barrel aging. Round up the usual chocolate subjects for pairings.

Thanks again to a member of my Asheville delivery service for his selection.

This is indeed a gem of a beer and I doubt mine will last until 2017.
