I've always thought of Saranac beer as "just ok".
    Nothing bad, just not standouts.

I went to their website to try to find something good to say. I one beer I recall from Saranac fnodly and it is not on their website- Caramel Porter.
I seem to recall a pale ale that was decent as well.

It seems insulting to suggest that Saranac are "training" craft beer, and I think that they are generally good enough to suit most palates.

Agreed with the Caramel Porter (Beeradvocate gave it a 72. Ratebeer was less kind with a 45) . I'll add their Imperial IPA to that very short list of good but not great beers. Your last statement I believe is a very fair assessment of their products.

"Where have all the....gone?" Have to figure out where I've heard that song before. I don't think it's Tom Lehrer. Will have to study on that.
Peter, Paul and Mary, released in 1962, was the popular version that got to the masses. The first 3 verses, however, were written by Pete Seeger in 1955, followed by additional verses by Joe Hickerson. I definitely prefer Seeger performing it. Big time political song that has been performed by so many different people.

Mountain Devil's standard beer preference I believe is Ninja Porter, as was mine until so many, many local great beers kept appearing. I do have one great advantage over the local Asheville posters here beer-wise, however, as I no longer have work responsibilities that would interfere with searching out new brew experiences. While I certainly cannot come close to others on the board regarding their beer prowess, I will try to do my part in keeping up with new brews that may be of interest. It really can be tough to pass up going to Burial or Pisgah or One World; or even The Wedge or ABC, to visit a brewery I haven't tried yet, but I will continue to make that sacrifice for the good of all on the board.

I would also suggest that the posters that are interested in visiting AVL for a beer adventure, do so over a period of enough days that allow you to not leave disappointed that you missed out on so many great brews you heard about but were unable to try. In addition, you should plan multiple trips that encompass warm and cold weather times when limited edition seasonal beers are available only on tap. Better yet, just give up your jobs and move here.

Founders All Day IPA fits nicely as a session beer also.
Agree on Founders All Day. Great beer.

Wasn't a big fan of Stone Go To though. Quite sweet at first followed by a very grapefruity, astringent finish. I usually like citrus and pine in my IPA but this was too over the top and didn't seem balanced.

In Florida, Cigar City makes a really nice Invasion pale ale that is very sessionable at 5.0% ABV

Agree. Brooklyn Local 2 is a very good beer and these modifications sound awesome.

I've been after ricks68 for months since he moved to Asheville to become a regular participant on this thread and I hope this post is one of many he makes over the next several years as he sips (and dines) his way through retirement in the NC mountains. I think fuse commented one time that all you needed to do was taste the beer and then type up your thoughts about it when a new poster here commented that they felt intimidated or lacked knowledge/experience in beer tasting.

"Where have all the flowers gone?" I think I heard from the Kingston Trio back in the day. Will research as we wait for Sunday and the 1000th victory game (potentially).

Will have to sample another foreign (to me) beer tonight and review. Will consider a trip to Hampton to view the Duke-St. John's game and try to lure Bob Green to join me. Just a thought.

"Where have All the Flowers Gone?" found it

referenced because we lost beer reviews, wanted it revived.

Anybody (else) old enough to remember the Kingston Trio?

Yes, the Kingston Trio did it, too. I have the Once Upon a Time album that has it that was recorded in Stereo by them in 1966. Hardly played, as I was busy wearing out their first two albums I still have in HI-FI. When Seeger came to Duke (maybe around 1965) while I was a student, he performed it. He was wonderful. I am old and crustie.

Yep. But here's the writer/co-writer and probably a version that pre-dates The Kingston Trio's release and the Peter, Paul and Mary version:

Age question aside, I grew up listening to the Kingston Trio Last Month of the Year Christmas album.

It remains in regular rotation during the holidays as my favorite Christmas album.

    Love the Kingston Trio!

    For budwom and fuse especially:

The article brought back many fond and amusing memories of our beer-cation in the northeast last summer.

Went to Q BBQ yesterday, had ribs, potato salad, corn pudding and cornbread (and a generic beer). Chain of 4 restaurants is owned by Tuffy Stone. From BBQ Pitmasters fame. Nothing short of fabulous. Mark had beef brisket, Lil' Joe had NC BBQ. Just awesome food.
Found a recipe for corn pudding I'm gonna make today-my version of Winter Warmer; especially if FSU can do the 'Holes

Ok, depending on timing we might be in for converging on Ashville for a DBR weekend beercation.

Thinking Aloft downtown and maybe do one of the brewery tour bus deals one day/night, or impose on one of the locals to lay out a plan. :-)

    Weekend in February? April?

    Rad!

Here are a few tours that I know of

    http://www.brew-ed.com
http://ashevillebrewerytours.com - This one leaves from the Aloft lobby if you want convenience.
    http://ashevillebrewscruise.com
    http://ashevillealetrail.com
    http://amazingpubcycle.com

If you don't want to pay extra, you could spend one afternoon/evening just walking down the South Slope. You can stop by Green Man, Asheville Brewing Co., Burial Beer, Hiwire, Twin Leaf, and the Funkatorium (Wicked Weed's new sour/barrel aged facility). If you come in April, the new Catawba Brewing tasting room should be open (right across from twin leaf). All of those breweries are literally within a block or two of each other.

If the weather is nice, I would recommend going over to West Asheville to visit Wedge Brewing. Most of the seating is outdoors, and they always have a food truck or two for alcohol absorbing purposes. Other West Asheville Breweries are Altamont, Oyster House, and soon-to-be New Belgium. If you dig cider, you can also check out Urban Orchard Cider Company.

I should be free to meet up any weekend in February, other than the 14th. Be sure to post in advance of when you decide to come down(up?).

Looking like a Monday-Saturday for us in mid-May for a medical meeting (cough) and mini-vacation. But don't tell ricks68 yet.
