Ardent Dark Rye


Rye can be pretty polarizing for me, here goes.

About a half inch head formed post pour.
Luxurious, tiny bubble tan froth.

Didn’t last very long.

Rich chocolate and mild musty rye nose.

There’s a LOT of rye.

Ever have a really awesome beer that just doesn’t suit your palate?
Dark Rye is that for me.

While I get there is a solid chocolate backbone, its really buried underneath the rye.

If you enjoy rye, this is a great beer.
If not, look elsewhere.

Grateful to have tried it as Ardent makes great beer.

I *think* acc fan has delivered one of these in the past, perhaps in the 750 ml format, and I recall liking it a lot. Rye doesn't seem to bother my palate much so I'm looking forward to my pint can pretty soon. And, this is yet another reason why we have Ymm, Beer.

I recall enjoying Ruthless Rye(?) by Sierra Nevada, and Southern Tier Harvest Ale (and maybe a similar Ommegang beer).

Rye in the right proportions I enjoy as an adjunct.
As the main flavour? Not so much.

Style-pecan (imperial) brown ale
Format-a short aluminum tree cylinder
Stemware-snifter
Appearance-dark, dark brown with a thin, tan head
Nose-nutty
Mouthfeel-smooth
Tastes-nuts/pecans, dark caramel, herbal/earthy hops, hints of coffee and chocolate (neither added)
Hops-East Kent Goldings and Willamette
Adjuncts-peecans
IBU-estimated at 30
ABV-10% (whoa!)
Overall impression-tasty night cap, needing the high ABV after last night's loss
Ymm, Beer rating-high cat 2; I liked the Olde Hickory Acan better, but that was a tequila barrel aged brown ale; I think the other 3 recipients will still like this

Zaftig Nuttin 2 It
Pecan Brown Ale
10% ABV

Not much head, didn’t last.

Difficult to place the nose.
It would be easy to say nutty, and probably wrong.
Been a while since I’ve had a proper English Ale, the nose reminds me of noble hops.

Sweet caramel flows into something almost like grapefruit before a dry, woody finish.

Going to have to noodle on that mid-palate note a bit.
Unusual.

If not for that twist, I’d call this a right down the middle typical brown ale.

At 10%, this is lethal. No real hint of how big this beer is.

Maybe its not grapefruit in the middle- maybe its more cherry.
Yeah, that’s some interesting thinking as I type this.

The grapefruit assertion is more dissonant; cherry (and maybe cherry wood) and honey makes more sense, and is more integrated.
Maybe a temperature artifact.

Regardless, highly enjoyable.

You guys just about covered it. Nice and smooth. Easy to forget it's 10%. I could see where fuse gets the touch of cherry wood. I almost catch a little barrel action but it wasn't barrel aged...

I agree with the highly enjoyable part.

Now back to work. Yuck.
