Advice to anyone trying the Orval this week - pour as slow as you possibly can. Lots of head that goes nowhere!

But it's worth the wait! What a delightfully complex beer!

Nose-dark caramel syrup and earthy
Mouthfeel-almost creamy
Tastes-rich and full of dark caramel with hints of molasses, coffee and nuttiness
IBU-none quoted but my guess is 30
ABV-6%
Overall impression-brings back pleasant, tasty memories from probably 20 years ago
Ymm, Beer rating-not an exciting style but this is a high quality brew and earns a high cat 2 score; good for pairing with grilled fare (Ymm, Grilling, oh, wait...)

Olde Hickory - Acan Imperial Brown

Made with Agave and aged in Tequila Barrels

I couldn't find a review on here. Searching for Acan didn't work. (I know, that sounds kinda funny)

Malt and Tequila on the nose.

This was a bit of a complex beer. I enjoyed what I got of it. I got the first few sips and then Mrs. Nrrrrvous claimed the rest.

Loved the progression from the Malt up front to the sweetness of the Agave to the Tequila after. Maybe a touch too sweet? I'd have to try another to know for certain.

Mrs. Nrrrrvous enjoyed it. Said it was definitely a high 2 or 3 for her.

Mouthfeel-a bit of alcohol heat and a lot of sweet
Tastes-tequila añejo, dark agave syrup, wood, molasses, dark caramel
Adjuncts-agave nectar
IBU-might be shy of 30
ABV-12.6% (and felt every bit of it after half the bottle )
Overall impression-if you're not a tequila fan, this won't be for you; I'm a novice and I thought this was excellent
Ymm, Beer rating-low cat 3; like Nrrrrvous, I'd buy another 4 pack of this to share/trade and keep 2 for myself next time ()

Yea, I couldn't help chasing him down last PM at Total Wine and then having him spend some time chilling in the fridge. You'll greatly enjoy that one later this week.

There is one rated higher on one beeradvocate list (Abt 12) and is readily available at any good craft beer store, but it's not an authentic Trappist beer. There's another rated higher on a different beeradvocate list (Westvleteren 12) but it's basically available only at the monastery for 6 months each year and maybe at the monastery store at times.

Oooh, I've never seen or even heard of that one before. I know they've released a barrel-aged version and I saw a sign in Total Wine last PM for their Christmas Ale, but never a quad sour before. Looking forward to hearing/reading about that one.

I looked at the label of one of these last PM and really wanted to put one in the mixed 6er for VP but couldn't find the "authentic Trappist beer" hexagon on the packaging so I passed, but, I will return to Total Wine next week to grab a 4 pack of their Christmas ale at about $15 for the litter, IIRC.

Hardywood’s Brian's Barrel Blend No. 12

Chardonnay Barrel Aged Belgian Tripel and, Tomcat Gin Barrel Aged Ryewine and, fresh NE style IPA.

It’s a tasty complicated beer. Get the Chardonnay up front, almost buttery. Hit of gin. A little hop. 10%. A great cat 3 offering that isn’t a Hardywood Stout. They have done a bunch of these Brian’s Blends. All have been excellent.
