    Compass Rose Hop Tart
Dry Hopped Sour Ale with Mixed Berries

    A beautiful rose pour.

    No head.
Really acrid bitter vinegar nose with a hint of fruit sweetness.

    Fairly mild alcohol, light mouthfeel.
Just a hint of fruit sweetness.
Loads of deliberate off flavours- grassy hay, “horse blanket” and barnyard.

Maybe not my first Compass Rose beer, definitely my first Compass Rose can.
I’ve still never been to the brewery.
My introduction to their brewery was via social media.

The wife of the husband and wife team that runs the brewery is a cancer survivor.
While they may toil in a bit of obscurity locally, Compass Rose products fit in the good and enjoyable range.

    Cheers! 🍻

I'm able to help with your problem .

I didn't know they packaged any of their beers except via growlers.

    Compass Rose Tidal Wave IPA

DNP- coaches decision from yesterday’s virtual pub.

    Super orange and pineapple nose.
    Dense, frothy head.

A massive burst of Citra and Mosaic.

    A great “new style” IPA.

Ha! I wondered which beverages might have been DNP-CD from all the participants yesterday.

Does it restore a bit of your faith in Trophy after our last trip there?

It’s way better than my memory of recent trips to Trophy, so...yes!

    My DNP-CD were:

HiWire's Hazy&Juicy&Hoppy&Fresh and your Citra Mosaic Opacity from The Glass Jug.

Can’t wait to read what you think about that Glass Jug beer.

A Belgian trippel inspired by, what else (?), NOLa’s signature cocktail. Brewed with fennel, Jamaican allspice, and something in the absinthe category, and then aged in rye whiskey barrels for six months. What’s not to love? This beer is complex and flavorful, but exceptionally balanced. Easily Cat 3. A tough “get,” because it’s from one of their special “High Country” series, so I was thrilled to see one during my recent Stella stop. Like Justin Robinson, Haw River and Stella come through yet again!

Madorugada Obscura Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout

What a weird experience...I’m not sure what I expected from a BBA stout from a brewery that specializes in sours. It came out in a goblet and looked exactly like a regular stout—dark with a coffee-colored head. It smelled like a stout. It tasted like...a sour!

Upon further review I could taste a bit of the boozy flavor typical of a BBA, and I think the sour flavor was tempered a bit by the sweetness of the bourbon. The sour flavor paired nicely with the sweet samples of my wife’s vegan chocolate cake and coconut milk ice cream. And as the last beverage of the night, I definitely felt the 10.2% ABV.

I’m still on the fence about whether sours are “my thing”. Guess I need to try some others to figure it out...

With those two hops in the brew, I'm greatly anticipating it, too.

You've convinced me-it'll be a tomorrow night tasting.

I think I've had one sour stout and I'm certain in was not BBA.

We shoulda got you interested in the Virtual Pub a few months ago when sours were the theme beer. I was certainly challenged that day drinking/sharing several sours.

I've been pondering this sipping/review for over a week now and still can't decide to quote fuse and say, "Hoppy gasoline" or use one of my old reviews and rave about its complexity. Well, I think it's somewhere in-between.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle in 4 ounce aliquots into a cordial glass over 3 nights last week. Appearance was somewhat viscous with a golden-yellow hue with a thin head. Vinous nose along with booze and orange peel. Tastes of grain alcohol (strong!!), orange liqueur, orange peel, table syrup and sherry. Very warming, alcohol finish. Named 120 Minute IPA (actually a DIPA or maybe a TIPA, I guess) for a 120 minute boil with multiple hop additions and finished at 120 IBUs () with an ABV somewhere in the 18% range, lower than the 20-21% it has been in prior releases. I think it would overpower most foods and is best slightly chilled and sipped in small portions over 30-45 minutes. I'll probably pull a bottle of this from storage in 6 months and review again twice annually. Several available for trading...
From 3 nights this week as an extended prelude to Ymm, Beer Virtual Pub yesterday:

120 Minute IPA-Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

    Of course it's not local

Credit-davec for designating it IPA day yesterday and my cellar for giving up a bottle for the cause
    Style-"The Imperial India Pale Ale"
Format-12 ounce bottle over three nights
    Freshness stuff-Bottled on 10/20/17 1546
    Stemware-mini Ditka, err, snifter
    Appearance-clean; same color as above
    Nose-see 2018 review
    Mouthfeel-hot and hoppy
Tastes-same as two years ago; not any more tame from 2018 or a couple bottles I shared in 2019
    IBU-120
ABV-not listed (somewhere north of 15% and south of 20% as it's not "legal" in NC)
Overall impression-still one of my favorite "big" beers, but only in 4-6 ounce servings
Ymm, Beer rating-solid cat 3; will be interesting again in 6 month intervals to re-visit this hop and booze monster

Don't see many of these in NC:

    Bourbon BA Gingerbread Stout-Imp Stout

    15% ABV

    • Moody Tongue Brewing Company

    • Chicago, IL

Might be an interesting comparison with one/some of the Hardywood GBS variants...

    Here's an unusual combination:

Hop Chocolate, a chocolate IPA, from Gizmo Brew Works in Raleigh.
