Compass Rose Hop Tart
Dry Hopped Sour Ale with Mixed Berries
A beautiful rose pour.
No head.
Really acrid bitter vinegar nose with a hint of fruit sweetness.
Fairly mild alcohol, light mouthfeel.
Just a hint of fruit sweetness.
Loads of deliberate off flavours- grassy hay, “horse blanket” and barnyard.
Maybe not my first Compass Rose beer, definitely my first Compass Rose can.
I’ve still never been to the brewery.
My introduction to their brewery was via social media.
The wife of the husband and wife team that runs the brewery is a cancer survivor.
While they may toil in a bit of obscurity locally, Compass Rose products fit in the good and enjoyable range.
Cheers! 🍻
Compass Rose Tidal Wave IPA
DNP- coaches decision from yesterday’s virtual pub.
Super orange and pineapple nose.
Dense, frothy head.
A massive burst of Citra and Mosaic.
A great “new style” IPA.
🍻
Trophy What Your Frame of Mind Has Already Chosen NEIPA
Lemon nose.
Great robust head.
Good mouthfeel and tropical salad taste.
Haw River Sazerac
A Belgian trippel inspired by, what else (?), NOLa’s signature cocktail. Brewed with fennel, Jamaican allspice, and something in the absinthe category, and then aged in rye whiskey barrels for six months. What’s not to love? This beer is complex and flavorful, but exceptionally balanced. Easily Cat 3. A tough “get,” because it’s from one of their special “High Country” series, so I was thrilled to see one during my recent Stella stop. Like Justin Robinson, Haw River and Stella come through yet again!
"Amazing what a minute can do."
Jolly Pumpkin
Madorugada Obscura Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout
What a weird experience...I’m not sure what I expected from a BBA stout from a brewery that specializes in sours. It came out in a goblet and looked exactly like a regular stout—dark with a coffee-colored head. It smelled like a stout. It tasted like...a sour!
Upon further review I could taste a bit of the boozy flavor typical of a BBA, and I think the sour flavor was tempered a bit by the sweetness of the bourbon. The sour flavor paired nicely with the sweet samples of my wife’s vegan chocolate cake and coconut milk ice cream. And as the last beverage of the night, I definitely felt the 10.2% ABV.
I’m still on the fence about whether sours are “my thing”. Guess I need to try some others to figure it out...

Don't see many of these in NC:
Bourbon BA Gingerbread Stout-Imp Stout
• 15% ABV
• Moody Tongue Brewing Company
• Chicago, IL
Might be an interesting comparison with one/some of the Hardywood GBS variants...
