Challenge the Bear. Baltic porter from Lickinghole Creek, so drink local! Baltic porter with graham cracker, honey and a touch of peanut. 8.5%. Label reads Maris Otter as the base malt. Taste the honey and graham cracker, a bit of caramel. Not really getting any peanut but that’s okay. It’s lighter and better than their imperial stout. Easy drinking and enjoyable on this cold evening.

What should I pair with all this outstanding hot salsa I'm enjoying with blue corn chips? IPA's? I'll tell you that everything I've "paired" so far has worked swimmingly. Allagash White, and then tonight Delirium Tremens (which I still don't believe is made by the same brewery that made Delrium Red Robitussin DM).

(I am forever in debt to the Ymm Beer and Ymm Spicy food threads. I plan to get over to the Ymm Fitness thread in about 7 more years.)
    A fire extinguisher.

Seriously, I think IPAs/IIPAs generally pair well with hot and/or spicy foods.

Especially a cold Ballast Point Sculpin Habanero.

Even though this reads tasty, you lost me at Baltic Porter.

Oops, guess I'd better put that Hardywood Baltic Porter back on the shelf...

Yeah, I’m typically not a porter fan. This was a Xmas gift from the son, purchased solely on the description. Golden in color, it drank more like an ale than a porter, nothing like a stout.

"Grandma's Secret Recipe: our imperial stout, Dire Wolf, and infused with dates, toasted walnuts, orange peel, cinnamon, cloves, allspice and vanilla beans. This beer was inspired by the secret fruit ball cookie recipe of our head brewer's grandma!"

I'm trying to find the actual recipe for Grandma's Date Nut Balls they printed on the label of this bottle release.

    Have at it, folks!

At Ardent with their Altbeir, Dark Rye, BBA Maple Dark Rye and their BBA Milk Stout. Reviews to follow when I’m able to put a few sentences together.

    Hardywood Triple Barrel GBS

A bit nervous on this one as it was a chunky, chunky pour.

Crazy boozy nose- rum, bourbon, and apple brandy compete for air time to singe the nostrils. There is some cookie and spice notes trying valiantly to be noticed.

    Dense mouthfeel.
Mid palate there’s a burst of cinnamon, ginger and other spice.

The apple brandy finish is pretty unmistakable, and quite powerful.

It amazes me that a new theme emerging for me is that describing the initial sip of these GBS variants are really challenging.
Maybe its the actual gingerbread that is the prevailing opening note.

    Pretty darn good.

Any significant differences as the beer warmed up a bit?

If possible, gets boozier. I’m still maybe only halfway through my glass.

I wonder if Hardywood could, and if there were a market for it, if they could brew “small” GBS and take the ABV down from 9%+ to half that.

It would still likely be too rich to enjoy more than one.

Alternatively, I’d love to see a brewery adopt 4oz aluminum can “small boys” for high ABV beer.

Ahh, I do miss those 7 oz ponies of the Rogue XS high gravity series that I bought a couple decades ago which consisted of an imperial stout, Old Crustacean, their Scotch style ale and maybe one other style (imperial pilsner? early IIPA?).

This my second triple barrel, shared with son in law. I didn’t get any overwhelming brandy, I got ginger, bourbon and rum, and cinnamon on the finish. Outside the GBS set, the stand alone bottle was $25 (thank you daughter).

Truly a strong cat 3 to me.

I’d explain my poor attempt at humour, except it might end up in something threatening to cut me again. 😱
