Sacred Sacrum 2016-Against the Grain Brewery

From their All Funked Up Wild Series (words all spelled correctly); "wild beers, wild souls"

    Credit-me!
    Format-capped 750 ml bottle
Genre-Belgian style ale aged in red wine barrels; finished with Brettanomyces
Appearance-murky; dark raspberry-amber; smallish, bubbly head
    Nose-wine and funk
    Mouthfeel-mild to moderate tart/sour
Tastes-Cabernet; wet straw; berries; raisins; dates; figs; tart/sour; wood
    IBU-20?
    ABV-9%
Overall impression-very interesting beverage that likely started with a Belgian style dubbel, followed by lots of different additions
Ymm, Beer rating-low cat 3; would buy others from the series; not world class but still an excellent mélange of flavors
Wine barrel aging does a beer nothing but good.

The AMB blueberry sour may have been the most wine like of the sours.

All Funked Up may have been the most complex of all the sours tasted last night

Funky nose. Great red wine and oak character.
This is a great sipping beer.

This was a great beer to end on.

I’m not sure I really want to do this.
I’m going to try to rank the sours we had last night.

The real answer is a seven way tie for first, and that’s no fun.

So if I had to choose:
    1) Ad Idem
    2) Brewery Bhavana Cellar Door Number One
    3) New Glarus Wild Ale
    4) All Funked Up
    5) Err on the Side of Awesome
    6) AMB Blueberry
    7) Cherry Pie

    Honourable mention: Broomtail Tangerine Gose

There were a few DNP Coaches Decision.
Perhaps a sour beer tasting reunion? 😀

Absolutely! We'll be at the Syracuse tailgate. We'll also make a Raleigh beer crawl to Bhavana, Burial, and Bond so we'll need some sours there to balance all that S-weetness.

    Beer is better with friends.

This was a great revisit, and perhaps the smoothest of the sours we tasted last night.
It was definitely the most pure- no fruits or additives, simple barrel aged sour goodness.

Not tart, or bitter. The sour so well complemented the base malt you can see why Brewery Bhavana uses this as the base recipe for all their sours.

Perfect as a standalone, and no mere “vanilla” sour.

Right up there with Ad Idem is terms of just how amazing this beer is.
    Or this perhaps?

    I'm going with:

    First-Ad Idem
Second-the other six, but only about half a point behind

I enjoyed the two drafts, Pretty in Pink and Gizmo Gose Wild, with lunch, but they were clearly a step behind the dinner/evening beers.

There may have to be a sour reunion with the three that RJ199 brought but were DNP-CD; I'm not drinking them myself. Plus, a Steel String sour that fuse brought also got a DNP-CD. I'd be "pot committed" with almost any theme again: imperial stouts, DIPAs, any barrel-aged theme, authentic Belgians. Bring it!

A Raleigh beer "crawl" would have to be: Nickelpoint, Neuse River, Sub Noir (if still open), Lynnwood Brewing Concern and Big Boss. Why? Because they're all within about 1 1/4 miles "stumbling" distance of each other. I'll let fuse propose an alternative Cary or Apex beer crawl and I'd readily agree to that as a highly palatable alternative.

An alternative Raleigh beer crawl could be: Brewery Bhavana, Burial, Trophy and Crank Arm.

Apex wouldn’t be a walking tour, unfortunately.

Southern Peak, Brueprint, and then Vicious Fishes as a wild card if open. Scratch is technically owned by Mason Jar, I’d say it belongs on the list (plus has great food).

Cary I think you could make Jordan Lake, Bond Brothers and one other (Cotton something?) into a walking tour, and maybe add the downtown beer shop. Fortnight is close and still not a reasonable walk.

    14.7% ABV

    • The Bruery

    3 Weight-Sierra Nevada Brewing Company

    Credit-August West; thanks!
Format- 12 ounce bottle from their current mixed 12 pack
    Style-session IPA
    Appearance-light straw; modest, meringue-y head
    Nose-grapefruit juice cocktail light
    Mouthfeel-mild bitterness
Tastes-Tropicana light grapefruit juice; flowers; light caramel
    IBU-38
    ABV-4%
    Grains-Pilsner, CaraRed, Perla Negra, Wheat
Hops-Cascade, Citra, Magnum, Simcoe, Mosaic, Loral
Overall impression-good porch sipper or fishing beer; if tasted blindly, there's a good chance I'd guess this to be a Euro lager/pilsner
Ymm, Beer rating-cat 2; the 12 pack would be a nice purchase for those wanting to try several SN beverages or drink 6 and trade 6

World class beer. (Can I stop my review there? )

Delivery source: accfanfrom1970 (Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!)

Normally, I'd cellar a beer like this for 6-12 months or more given its characteristics and expectations, but somehow, this one beckoned me on Tuesday and Wednesday nights when I divided this 750 ml capped bottle.

Poured into Gouden Carolus and Allagash tulips, the color was gold with a modest fizzy and foamy head. As anticipated, aromas were ginger, honey/light brown sugar and bourbon. Tasted like a classic bourbon and ginger ale cocktail with a tad more sweetness from the honey-ish finish. Amazingly smooth at only 18 IBUs with the ginger providing a bit of a warming bite. ABV was a dangerous 11.5% as it was seductively smooth and easy sipping and could have been consumed in one sitting. Or shared (hint to accfanfrom1970: we'd gladly welcome one or more of these to a tailgate this fall if you and your wife are able to attend again-yes, I'm shameless). Cost? I got this and two Hardywood GBS variants for $25, almost unheard of pricing for beers of this quality.

    Thank you again!
    From last PM:

Bourbon Barrel Aged Honey Ginger 2019-Ardent Craft Ales

Credit-trader from accfanfrom1970; thanks and more thanks!!
Format-brought to you now in 12 ounce bottles
    Style-Belgian style tripel
    Appearance-golden amber; same type head
    Nose-as above
    Mouthfeel-bubbly; warming
Tastes-Fullsteam Cackalacky meets Mother Earth Triple Overhead; medium brown sugar; ginger zing
    IBU-18
    ABV-a truly dangerous 11.5%
    Overall impression-still outstanding
Ymm, Beer rating-easily fuse cat 3; worth seeking out/trading for

    (Gap)

    3) AMB Blueberry - (still Fuse Category 3)
    4) Err on the Side of Awesome (still Fuse Category 3)
    5) All Funked Up - still loved it, definitely most complex of all
    6) Cherry Pie - loved this too, just rougher sour

I've been pondering the possibilities since yesterday afternoon. Yours is a good one. I'll post some options/suggestions tomorrow AM or early evening to discuss.

    New Glarus means great beer.
Thumbprint / red label NG means even greater. 😀

Nose almost smells artifically sweet, like sticking your nose in a bag of gummy candy. There is definitely some nostril tickling sour vinegar lurking.

An unusual copper / amber colour.

I’m not sure how to describe the taste explosion behind Kuhler.
Can a taste be subtle and dynamic at the same time?

This is not a punch you in the mouth sour.
Mouthfeel is delightfully viscous and syrupy.

This might be the Gran Marnier of beer.
Not boozy, and yet reminiscent of the famous orange liqueur.

It would be an awful lot of fun to follow New Glarus staff around for a day just to gain an appreciation of what goes into such a quality operation.

Part of the label description talks about open fermentation/coolship beer and that this beer was brewed in 2017 and aged for a year and a half in oak before bottling.

Just another New Glarus world class beer.

    Thanks devildeac! 🍻
I had Kuhler tonight. Thanks Devildeac! (running around room pretending to be Peter Pan with joy!) Fuse Category 3. I agree - it's very complex. Sweet but not at all cloying. To me it tastes like strawberry and white wine - 2 things that are not my favorite - and I absolutely loved this beer. That's how fantastic it was. The balance of everything going on right through the dry finish was magical. So magical you can fly!
