    Arizona beer final impressions:

Flagstaff/Northern Arizona doesn’t have great beer, but Mother Road was above average. Apparently Dark Sky is supposed to be pretty good, but we weren’t able to try them.

Wren House makes awesome beer in Phoenix. Excellent pilsners, IPAs and a great oatmeal stout.

For southern Arizona, Pueblo Vida in Tucson makes great NEIPAs. That is pretty much all they offer, but they are all low/mid Cat 3.

Black Rose Brewery on the outskirts of Tucson was a hidden gem. Their Vanilla Porter was better than Breckenridge's.

Arizona seems to be in the up-and-coming phase of craft beer. Certainly not as good as NC, but not the worst place.

Ha! I was gonna throw some shade on AZ beers based on distance, availability and relatively small # of breweries but, after you were kind enough to post these reviews/thoughts, that would not be a wise or thoughtful action on my part. Thank you for the info and I hope you and your husband had a great trip.

Lol. At this point, I bet you can find Cat 3 beer in at least 40 of the 50 states. You may have to look hard in some of them, but they are there.

Like I’m really gonna fall for the “we’re two different people” thing.

    Nice try.

Diregorgon-Streetside Brewery, a collaboration with Wolf's Ridge Brewing

    Local

    Credit-son; thanks!!
    Style-flavored imperial stout
    Format-pint can
    Stemware-snifter
    Appearance-dark brown and foamy
    Nose-dark, roasted grains
    Mouthfeel-slick
Tastes-baker's chocolate, burnt caramel, almonds, vanilla, hint of coffee
    Adjuncts-toasted almonds and vanilla
IBU-"no IBU" but likely 50ish based on the style
    ABV-11%
Overall impression-very good but the Dire Wolf version, a "Spumoni style" imperial stout was better
Ymm, Beer rating-high cat 2; lotsa entries and this is good but doesn't stand out; fun plans by the 2 breweries to each brew their own versions and sell as mixed 4 packs

Haw River Javaturtle Coffee Cream Stout

Oh my! Lactose, pecans, cocoa powder, caramel candy sugar, French roast coffee. All blended together in 7% ABV of smooth-drinking deliciousness. If you see it, buy it. Terrific beer.

They've done a great series of java brews and that one sounds like another high quality Haw River concoction.
