Not a “blow your mind” beer like most from Haw River, but still refreshing on a summer day. Cat 2.
Sounds like a good beer for Devildeac when he kayaks the haw river. That sounds like work, I'll be in a tube with hands free to sip.

I'm also following your lead to Lowe's beer den. I still need to try Sexual Chocolate not just because it sounds like an amazing beer, but Coming to America has to be one of Eddie Murphy's best movies. And I'll get some Jade IPA while there.

I can bring you a bottle of SC when we play 10-pin with DD on September 20, if you like. You should also try to track down Dead & Berried, BBA People’s Porter, Moravian People’s Porter, Cherry People’s Porter, and Olde Rabbit’s Foot (a decadent collab with Olde Hickory and Duck Rabbit). IMO (with no pretense of an “H”), Foothills’ portfolio of dark beers is NC’s best (and maybe the best on the East Coast; Deshutes may be better out West).
"Amazing what a minute can do."

Zaftigs “Nuts for You.” Bourbon Barrel Aged Peanut Butter Stout. Smooth, hint of chocolate up front, boozy peanut butter on the finish. 9% abv. Of course you have to like stouts and peanut butter, but this is desert in a bottle. DevilDeac, next trip to Columbus pick some up, but it is a limited release.

    Speaking of Trippy,

    Stable the Fading Light - Newgrass Brewing - NE-DIPA - 8.5 % - "with Mosaic cryo and Idaho 7"

The pour is cool. It looks like an opaque, pulpy, russian tea. It leaves a thin white head for just long enough to smell a beautiful mango aroma with just a hint of pine.

This beer is great, and it's complex. With the taste you really wanna wait for the finish and after-finish, which is outstanding. If you like mosaic, you'll definitely want to try this one. The complex taste has about 4 parts - It starts malt forward, almost a little sweet but not quite, so definitely not too sweet. Then you get citrus - oranges and mangoes quickly transitioning to piney and hoppy, but not too bitter. The best is a beautiful, dry mosaic finish which lingers, but you really have to wait for that. You'll want a second glass of the same beer after the first. The mouthfeel is nice, juicy, with a little light carbonation and boozy bite at first getting more soft as it goes. Overall I'll give it Fuse Category 2 - worth a try. I think this brewery is getting some buzz. And this growler will give me some buzz if I'm not careful. Cheers!
Going to be actively looking for this...

What a great gauntlet to throw as food for discussion.

Duck Rabbit belongs in the conversation, along with Mother Earth for Silent Night.

For BBA Porter alone, I’d include Foothills, not to mention the others you note above. Dead and Berried is one I really want to try along with Cherry Porter.

Scratching my head on other NC breweries I associate with dark beer, maybe Haw River St Benedict, and Raleigh Brewing The Toll and Hidden Pipe Porter, which leads to remembering Fullsteam Coffee is for Closers, and Steak Knives.

Gee its a shame there’s no good dark beer being brewed anywhere in NC! 🤪

Thanks! I'll definitely take you up on the SC bottle and bring something fun in return. I'll look for all of these along with those that fuse recommended. I've loved dark beers since college when I used to always be the guy who ordered Guinness. I might have had a few Irish Car bombs at Satisfactions as well. One college best friend got a bud light and the other got, yes a strawberry daiquiri which we'll never let him forget. But I like pumpkin beer and am learning not to judge.

    I'm ready for stout season.

WAG here: They used traditional pilsner grains and an ale yeast (or vice versa). May have to do with cold fermentation (lagering) vs warm fermentation.

LOL. No beer on the river, today or likely any day. Funny story: Just before we went out for our two hour "float," err, kayaking adventure today (which required a rather mild amount of work), our 3.5 year old granddaughter declared, "If we were on a tube, Daddy and Grandpa could drink beer." OMG!

Duck-Rabbit is known as the "dark beer specialist brewery" or something like that. However, I'm leaning very strongly toward agreeing with you about Foothills instead.

We'll be up there Sept 20-22 and Zaftig is about 5 miles from our son's house. Would you care to place an order ?

Somebody else's opinion of good goses:

A bit outdated but an interesting read.

I thought Ymm, Beer did a better job .

    An "old" but amusing read:

    https://www.thrillist.com/drink/nati...ned-craft-beer

"I made a face and tried it again. It tasted like it had been squeegeed off the back of a German day laborer toiling in a coriander processing plant. As I frantically attempted to wipe it off my tongue like a cartoon child, the bartender pointed to a beer menu he had found, which identified the beer thusly: “Gose.”

If they have the BBA Peanut Butter Stout I’ll take a 4-pack. I still have some of the regular one.

    Haw River Tasseography Project Review

    Here's hoping this is epic.

Haw River released a 4 pack of 16oz cans called White, Green, Red, and Smoke as "Tasseography".
Haw River is a bit notorious in my mind for poor website and info on their beer in general.

The base beer is the same "rustic saison".

White - white tea peony and white peppercorn
Green - gunpowder green tea and green peppercorn
Red- red roiboos tea and sichuan red peppercorn
Smoke - smoked lapsang souchong and smoked peppercorns

Visually, White and Green are similar/identical.
Red looks like an amber/red ale like Killians.
Smoke is just a shade deeper gold than White or Green.

The nose on white and green are very saison-y- mild funky grassy hay.
    Red's nose is spicy.
Smoke's nose is, as expected, smoky.

White tastes like a fairly straightforward saison, with maybe a hint of unexpected sweetness.

Green the peppercorn is pronounced, adding a nice twist to the bevy of saison goodness.

Red's flavour is unusual- there is some sweetness, but the sichuan pepper adds a mild heat. Nothing unpleasant. If you are not familiar with how rooibos tea tastes, you’ll be in for a treat as it becomes more prevalent as the beer warms.
The heat is not particularly subtle as an aftertaste. A really intriguing beer that stands alone nicely, also would pair with a variety of food.

Smoke might be the perfect beer to pair with NC barbeque. The nose is a slow burning coal grille, and the smoke is the dominant flavour in the beer. This is a beer that cries out for food. Enjoyable on its own nonetheless.

A 64oz tasting is no joke, and I am grateful for the Love Ninja's involvement.

Haw River makes amazing beer, and the Tasseography project is no exception.
