    Zaftig - Columbus, Ohio

    Orange Vanilla Ol' Rugger

Russian Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels.
12 ounce bottle, 2020 vintage purchased at the brewery release party by sister of accfan. Get a lot up front - orange, vanilla, bourbon, tobacco, roasted malt, chocolate and oak. Good amount of orange and vanilla in both the aroma and taste. Tastes like a boozy chocolate orange. Russian stouts are not as light or smooth as milk stouts, more bite. The orange and vanilla help this one out. Glad it’s a 12oz. bottle, 16% abv. Mid cat3.

Rhinegeist- Cincinnati (by way of Kenny’s Market in Columbus)

BIG WILLY - BOURBON BARREL AGED WEE HEAVY

“Big Willy is as gentle a giant as ever roamed a heath. Brimming with Honey Malt and Chocolate Wheat, the weighty stride of this Wee Heavy Ale is softened by a stint in freshly used bourbon barrels. The result is a flavorful footprint of toasted oak, rich toffee and vanilla. Fee-fi-fo-yum.”
    ABV: 12.1%
Aged: 12 Months in Bourbon Barrels
    Hops: Magnum, Glacier
Malts: Maris Otter, Pale Chocolate, Melanoidin, Crystal Dark, Carafa 2

Another excellent big beer from Rhinegeist. This has aged a while too, 2019. They use barrels from New Riff a local distillery. Rich, malty, hint of chocolate, hint of oak, balanced with the bourbon. Cat3.

Oil of Aphrodite - JackieO’s Athens, Ohio

    Imperial stout brewed with walnuts.

“Oil of Aphrodite is an American double stout brewed with locally harvested black walnuts and Belgian candied syrup. English, German, American, and Belgian malts are accompanied by Pacific Northwest hops, creating a sweet and rich springboard for deep nuttiness.”

    STYLE
    AMERICAN IMPERIAL STOUT

    ABV 10%
    HOPS - COLUMBUS, WILLAMETTE
    MALTS -
2-ROW, BLACK MALT, C-120, CHOCOLATE, MUNICH, OATS, ROASTED BARLEY, SPECIAL ROAST, VIENNA
    OTHER INGREDIENTS -

Great balance of sweet, roasty, malty, nutty.

New brewery - Talleysville out in New Kent and connected to the New Kent Winery.

    Best two -

Double Cut DIPA - really nice beer, smooth mouth feel, juicy. Hints of pineapple, grapefruit, berries. Dry hopped with Citra, Mosiac and Vic Secret. Have not heard of the last one. 8.2% abv, 26 ibu’s.

Vanilla Wheat Ale - brewed with vanilla, orange peel and lactose. Creamy, vanilla up front, hint of orange. 7.5% abv 25 ibu’s. Really liked the smooth, vanilla on this one.

Would have bought four packs of both of these except they only offer 32oz. crowler. Will be visiting this place again. Great outdoor setting, pretty view of the vineyard, nice wine offerings too.

    Coming up -

    Hardywood Special release -

Brian's Barrel Blend no. 13 (14.0% ABV) is a beautiful even blend of Apple Brandy Barrel Aged Wee Heavy & Apple Brandy Barrel Aged Barleywine.

Brian’s Barrel Blend no. 13 lends aromatics of ripe strawberry, oak, and toffee, followed by well balanced sweet sherry, caramel, and cherry flavors. This blend finishes on a warm note and lingers for just the appropriate duration.

Let me know how it went. All outdoor seating at the winery/brewery, but weather looks good. Wife liked the wine - Merlot and cab franc, I liked the dipa and vanilla ale. We sat on the back porch, also front deck and tent - but back porch the best.

Altamont DIPA - Ardent Craft Ales
    IPA - Imperial / Double
    8% ABV 7 IBU
Our freshest new DIPA in the Scott’s Addition series is back! Altamont DIPA was double dry hopped with Cashmere and Mosaic hops, featuring notes of melon and stone fruit flavors and bursting with tropical fruit aroma. This big, juicy DIPA is a soft, hazy treat.

This was a treat. Get the tropical fruit, and the smooth, soft feel. No bitterness, just tasty.

    Again this weekend - Founders

    MAS AGAVE CLASICA LIME
    BARREL-AGED IMPERIAL LIME GOSE
    ABV: 10%
    IBUs: 15

“We love cocktails. Like, really love them. If you ask us, few are more refreshing than the tart and tangy margarita and this barrel-aged beer pays tribute to that perennial classic. We took an imperial gose brewed with agave, lime and sea salt and then aged it in tequila barrels. Consider it a party in a bottle. ¡Más Agave Clásica Lime!”

Really get the margarita vibe. Great beer with spicy tacos with black beans.

Even better than the lime - Founders -

    MAS AGAVE CLASICA PRICKLY PEAR
    BARREL-AGED IMPERIAL PRICKLY PEAR GOSE
    ABV: 9.7%
    IBUs: 15

“An oasis of flavor in the desert of normalcy, this cocktail-inspired imperial gose is brewed with agave and sea salt then aged in tequila barrels. When it emerges we hit it with a healthy for dose of prickly pear extract, lending the liquid its flamboyant fuchsia glow and mellowing out the tangy tartness with hints of berry and melon. It’s no mirage, it’s the real deal. ¡Más Agave Clásica Prickly Pear!”

    Sweeter than lime, refreshing.

I, too, preferred the Prickly Pear over the Lime.

    Daydream Nation
Bluejacket - out of DC, great space and good food. Down by the Nationals Stadium
    Sour - Fruited
    6% ABV

A double fruited sour ale brewed with vanilla and milk sugar then finished with a huge amount of blueberries! Rich, round and dripping with blueberry fruit, Daydream Nation remains vibrant, tart and oh so refreshing.

High cat 2, nice balance between sweet and sour, easy to drink.

    Rye-on-Rye - Boulevard Brewing Co.

“Notes: Why Rye? This assertively flavorful grain is more often associated with whiskey than with ales. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch. But when we procured some seasoned barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, “Why not?” Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Two kinds of malted rye provide spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum, and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish.” 14.3% abv. 33ibus.

Limited release, cat3 beer. Smooth, rich, malty.
Has “please enjoy by 22April2023, so buy as much as you can, it’s good for a while.

Fun 4th of July celebration at the Richmond Flying Squirrels game. There is a local craft beer site with an Ardent, Hardywood, Center of the Universe and Legend offerings. Plus Hardywood has their own site with some additional special offerings like the Peach Tripel and newer Blackberry wit. Stone IPA brewing has a whole pavilion with 6 or so beers plus standup space for 50 or so people.

Pictures from the 50's of cooking pigs at Wally Wade

So why not re-institute that, start making beer on campus, grow hops, etc. Va Tech has their own brand of beer now (Hardywood assisted).
CB&B could certainly handle the pig side of this. Hire one of the Durham breweries, or other nearby brewers, to make it in collaboration with Duke, then expand from there. Could certainly help f-ball attendance as long as we put a good team on the field.
I love some good 'Cue, good beer and good f-ball!!
