    New Belgium Fat Tire

Does anyone else have a beer that enjoying it is largely about mood or circumstance than the beer itself?

Fat Tire is one of those beers for me.
Some days there is a strange sharpness to Fat Tire that is a bit offputting.
Other times, it is about perfect.

Tonight along with brats was one of those magical combinations.

    Delicious!

    Highland Cold Mountain

The last 12oz bottle of Cold Mountain in the fridge.
Maybe wishful thinking after soccer practice got cancelled due to heat.

The first few times I had Cold Mountain, it struck me as a brilliant beer.

The last couple years, Cold Mountain has lost its luster.
Is it familiarity breeds contempt? A changing recipe?

I can't really put a finger on it- maybe palate fatigue.

Smells like rich cherry juice and vanilla.

Tastes like a luxurious cream soda.

A beer I really, really want to like.
At the height of hypocrisy, not a beer to miss.

I think this year's batch has too much of a cinnamon flavor. Last year's was better IMHO. I still have some of both, and can easily tell which is considerably better.

Now, if MD will chime in here in time, I will include him in my local delivery.

We are planning on stopping by Innovation on the way back, so if that happens, I will now get you and Billy some good stuff, too--unless you let me know otherwise.😉

So, heading to Utah for several days. Hope to hit-up Uinta, Squatters and Wasatch. I sense a Provo Girl and a Polygamy Porter (or more than one) in my foreseeable future ...

Haw River Sun Hands Belgian Summer Golden

A "bountifully hopped Belgian-style strong golden ale, brewed with NC wildflower honey." 10% ABV, so "strong" is right. Pours a cloudy gold-yellow with a generous head. A tad more hoppy than a traditional Belgian, and I don't really taste the honey all that much. That said, another solid offering from Saxapahaw.

    Barmy-Ballast Point Brewing

Apricot jam, orange marmalade, bananas and wild mountain honey on lightly toasted whole wheat bread. Anything else y'all want to know?

Pretty new brew as far as I can tell. Procured at Total Wine this weekend as a 6er for about $16 (no coupon ), IICC. It's a Belgian-style golden ale that really should be labeled an imperial golden ale. Pour was a yellow-orange with a creamy, fizzy, lacy head, fitting nicely into my Ommegang tulip. Oranges, bananas and light caramel aromas. Tastes as above with a grain or two of black pepper, typical for this style. Apricots and honey are added but the rest of the flavors are pretty standard for a golden/triple ale. What's not standard is the ABV of 12% as most range from 8-10%. IBUs pretty modest at 25. Dangerously drinkable. I've got 5 left. Anyone interested?

Oak-Jacked, Uinta's imperial pumpkin ale that's bourbon barrel aged. Worth a try, even if it's not pumpkin "season" in the Wasatch Mountains.

Thanks for the reco. I like Uinta's stuff. Most interested in trying their Cutthroat Pale Ale. It might even be "in season."

And, in Utah, as we've alluded to already, you're allowed to have more than one...

    Thursday, September 1, 2016

I must admit, I've never seen a tasting/pairing with beer and Pop Tarts before.

I'm not sure whether this belongs here or in the LTE. Or both.

    Maine Beers

Haven't really been keeping up with the thread lately, but just made it back from Maine and tried some of their brews. Seems like just about everything comes out of Portland. Anyways, had some Geary's Ale as well as some Shipyard Summer Ale. I thought both were very good for a nice refreshing summer brew-just a little bit of citrus and smooth. I also tried Gritty's Vacationland Summer Ale and wasn't too impressed. It was a little harsh going down. Overall I was pretty impressed with their selection-at least for the summertime.
