Gene Wilder - RIP

An underrated performer who was in one of my favorite movies (the first Willy Wonka), and one of my hidden gem movies (Silver Streak). He just always seemed so genuine on the screen, and I always like that he was a successful movie star who didn't look like a typical movie star.

Gene Wilder was almost always hysterical.

I'll always consider his Leo Bloom -- the role that lifted him for obscurity to be his greatest role (even if Mostel did get most of the funny lines).

Wilder wasn't totally obscure when he made the Producers. He had appeared on Broadway and had a small part in Bonnie and Clyde. But he was still so downtrodden that (so the story goes) that he asked for time off during shooting he Producers for a dentist's appointment, when in fact, he was rushing to th unemployment office to pick up a $55 check.

Loved him in The Producers, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles and Wily Wonka. I thought Silver Streak was a classic -- they tried to recapture the chemistry between he and Richard Pryor in several other movies (such as Stir Crazy), but I never thought they clicked again. Great segment in Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex, but I guilty Gene Wilder pleasure has to be The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother.

Rest in peace ... I hope you are re-united with Gilda in comic heaven.
