I saw a screening of Sausage Party last night. There are many folks who read these boards who will LOVE THIS FILM!! There are others who will find it offensive and juvenile.

I howled with laughter. Truly hysterical. It was full of really clever political jokes about our modern society. The premise is utterly ridiculous and never really makes complete sense, but it does not matter. I was too busy laughing to really notice. The film is raunchy to a degree we rarely see. I mean, this flick makes Deadpool seem tame. There is a 5 minute sequence toward the end of the movie that is among the most insane sexual perversion I think I have ever seen on film... and I could not stop laughing. A critic friend commented that something had been cut out to keep the film from being rated X. But I cannot imagine what went too far after seeing the stuff that made it through the censors.

My 19 year old son cannot stop talking about how much he loved it. My critic friends all liked it. It is worth noting that they were giving out wine and beer at the screening and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND SEEING THIS FILM WITH A BUZZ!!

Sausage Party is not for everyone. Every time you think it cannot get more absurd or stoop lower to make a joke, it goes there. Nothing is sacred and there are lots of jokes that play on our prejudices about the races and religion. If cursing and lots and lots of sexual innuendo are not your thing, stay far far far away. But, if you think you can handle that stuff -- if you are a fan of movies like The Hangover, Wedding Crashers, This Is The End, and Deadpool -- then this is the film for you. You will spend half the movie shaking your head saying, "I can't believe they are doing this!?!!?!" and the other half of the movie convulsing with laughter.

-Jason "worth noting, I probably missed 20 or 30 jokes because the audience was laughing so loudly -- funniest movie of the summer and it ain't even close" Evans

P.S. - The ending is utterly ridiculous and may turn some folks off. I had turned off my brain by then and was just enjoying it. Frankly, there was no easy way to end it anyway.

Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?

This is exactly the kind of review I was hoping to see and I wish we could have some hidden cam footage of the parents who don't pay attention and take young kids to see this animated classic.

What's considered too young? My 14 year old son is dying to see it. I'm sure he already knows a lot about this stuff, but that doesn't mean I would feel comfortable taking him. It's gonna be a dilemma.

    Comparable to Borat?

Excellent - sounds like about what I want from a movie like that.

SuperBad almost made me pee myself in the theater.
    Let's go Duke!

He's going to see it eventually when it becomes available on Blu-ray anyway. It is rated R, so if he's allowed to see R rated movies now, I'd probably just go with it. Your call though, I don't have children so my suggestion doesn't really matter

Whew, that is tough. The movie probably drops 100 F-bombs and S-bombs. There is plenty of use of the C-word. The language is pretty severe.
There's also a fair bit of drug use.
The sex is mostly implied with jokes that may go over the head of a 14-year-old... until the end when there is a scene that would make porno stars blush. There is no chance a 14-year-old will even understand half the stuff happening in that scene (I'm not sure I understood all of it!) but he will be laughing so hard he may not notice it.

It really is your call. I will merely say... I warned you.

Oh, one important question, does your son know what a douche is? That's kinda important for the plot (and that question by itself should tell you all you need to know about the level of humor in this flick).

So, so, so different. The fact that it is animated allows them to do and say stuff that just would not fly in real life. Obviously, animation allows all the grocery store products to be anthropomorphized (is that a word?!?! How does one express the act of anthropomorphization). From a humor standpoint, I think Borat was making fun of our political correctness and our societal hangups. I don't think this movie is really doing the same thing. It certainly mines political correctness a bit, but I didn't really think of Borat as a comparison at all. to some extent it stands on its own as it goes places no other film has gone, in my opinion.

In that case, I have some important advice for this film...

You get bonus points for use of "anthropomorphization.". My wife and I comment regularly and the uncomfortable anthropomorphization of body parts in medical ads - most notably the toes that play tennis in the anti-fungal ads. There's also a wildly discomforting ad that features a woman dressed as an intestine.

Yes, I am still kind of creeped out by the bowels (looks like a loopy pink turtle) running for the bathroom.

This was already on my list (SURPRISE!!!), but after Jason's post, I went and found the red band trailer. OMG, I'm crying from laughing so hard - at the trailer!

Originally projected for a $15 mil opening, then upgraded to a $20 mil opening, then (after strong Thursday night previews and Friday matinees) projected to open over $25 million, it now appears Sausage Party has opened with around $33-34 million dollars. It is the biggest opening ever for an animated film in August.

I know some of ya'll saw it this weekend. I want to know if you laughed as much as I did.

Your review held true. Very funny, very clever, extremely raunchy final 5 minutes. The sexual grand finale is so insane, but goes by so fast, it's hard to actually tell what is happening from time to time.
